Plastic boxes are made of standard materials, comply with the manufacturer's instructions and notes when using to help you choose safe plastic boxes for your health.
Not all foods can be stored at room temperature. That is why many types of containers are created with a variety of designs and materials. They are considered "effective assistants" to help preserve food in the refrigerator more conveniently and safely.
Plastic food storage boxes in the refrigerator are indispensable items in the modern kitchen because of their convenience. However, boxes made from poor quality plastic can easily affect the quality of food.
Below are the principles for choosing plastic containers to preserve food in the refrigerator during Tet as recommended by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety.
Select materials that meet standards
Safe and healthy food containers must be made from safe materials, non-toxic, durable, and heat-resistant. Therefore, you should not buy plastic food containers of unknown origin, without any markings or without clearly stating the plastic material because you will not know whether it is safe for your health or not.
Safe plastic containers for food storage should be made from PP, plastic number 2 (HDPE), number 4 (LDPE) or plastic number 1 (PET/PETE). PET plastic food containers should only be used a maximum of 2-3 times.
Choose properly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Choosing a food storage container in the refrigerator also depends on the type of food stored, whether it is stored in the refrigerator or freezer. Usually, manufacturers will have instructions on which type of plastic container is used for storage in the refrigerator and which type is used for storage in the freezer.
Polypropylene (PP) plastic food containers are very safe for health; at low temperatures, PP plastic does not release any toxic substances. Therefore, PP plastic containers are completely safe for storing food in the freezer.
Notes on use
Do not put hot food directly into plastic containers because many types of plastic containers cannot withstand high temperatures and can produce harmful substances.
Do not use old, scratched plastic boxes because these types of boxes are difficult to clean and bacteria can easily grow.
For fresh food, use containers with tight-fitting lids.
Do not store highly acidic or highly acidic foods because they can dissolve substances in plastic containers. If plastic containers are made from unsafe materials, they can produce harmful substances when exposed to highly acidic environments. Therefore, avoid storing highly acidic or highly acidic foods in plastic containers.
