"Busy harvest" in both output and value

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, fruit and vegetable exports reached 7.1 billion USD, an increase of nearly 27% over the same period in 2023. This is a new record for the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable industry and is also a bright spot in the picture of agricultural, forestry and fishery exports in 2024.

Topping the list of exported fruits and vegetables is durian with an estimated value of 3.3 billion USD; followed by dragon fruit with 435 million USD, bananas, mangoes, jackfruit, coconuts, watermelons... The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development stated that the remarkable growth in the output of key fruits, combined with the effective exploitation of the Chinese market, has helped Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports achieve remarkable achievements in recent times.

Nguyen Thanh Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that fruits and vegetables are Vietnam’s strong products, currently present in more than 60 markets. Many key products such as mango, banana, durian, etc. are ranked second in exports to China, the world’s largest fruit and vegetable importer. In addition to fresh products, Vietnamese fruits and vegetables also have export items such as processed and deep-processed products.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, the results of fruit and vegetable exports in 2024 are due to the accumulation of achievements from previous years. Most fruit trees require a long investment period of 3-5 years; at the same time, the number of officially exported fruits and vegetables is increasing. For example, China currently licenses 15 officially exported fruit and vegetable products, including durian, banana, coconut, etc., which are fruit products with positive growth.

In addition, the market share of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables continues to increase, for example from 3rd to 2nd place in China, or strong growth in large markets such as the US, Thailand, etc. In particular, many trade promotion activities on fruits and vegetables are increasingly interested and invested in by all levels, sectors, and industry associations. In addition, with 16 new generation FTAs, the fruit and vegetable industry has many opportunities to access potential markets.

Improve quality for sustainable export

With a lot of market space, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association expects that the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable industry can bring in more than 8 billion USD in 2025. In particular, there are many new factors appearing such as frozen durian, fresh coconut exported to China, and passion fruit currently being negotiated with the US.

To maintain, expand the market and increase export value, businesses must strictly comply with the standards set by importing countries; build a sustainable and substantial production chain from growing areas, packaging facilities, plant quarantine treatment facilities, and export to create quality products.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung

Experts say that enterprises processing and exporting vegetables and fruits in general and fruits in particular are facing a great opportunity to increase export turnover. The reason is that the world market demand for this product is increasing, while Vietnam is doing a very good job of opening the market.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development expects that by 2025, Vietnamese passion fruit will be officially licensed for export to the US market. This is the result of negotiations between Vietnam and the US on phytosanitary measures for this fruit.

Currently, the technical negotiations have been completed and the two sides are completing the necessary legal procedures. The permission for passion fruit to enter the US market promises to create great momentum for the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable industry to continue expanding exports, especially to other demanding markets.

However, in 2025, the US-China trade war, global geopolitical conflicts, etc. are forecast to be major challenges. To achieve more sustainable exports, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung said that businesses need to pay attention to post-harvest technology, improve product quality and added value, and limit seasonal risks.

"The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will continue to negotiate to open the market, support the development of growing area codes, packaging facility codes, and develop national standards for key products. Along with that, there will be stricter legal institutions to help protect genuine producers." - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung informed.
