With nearly 650,000 hectares of production forest, Thanh Hoa has abundant input materials to develop the forest product processing industry. Recently, the province has attracted many projects with modern technology and production processes, helping to increase the value of forest products and create conditions to increase income for forest growers.
Bamboo and rattan materials are processed into export products at Bamboo King Vina Bamboo and Modified Wood Factory (Lang Chanh).
In December 2024, Bamboo King Vina Bamboo and Modified Wood Factory on a scale of 15 hectares, with a total investment of about 800 billion VND in Bai Bui Industrial Park (Lang Chanh) officially came into operation. With 12 production workshops, the factory has a processing capacity of 1,000m3 of wood and bamboo raw materials/day, creating jobs for 1,500 direct workers at the factory and thousands of indirect workers in the raw material area.
With an automated production line system from Germany and China, the factory uses denaturation technology. According to a representative of Bamboo King Vina Joint Stock Company, although this technology has been around for a long time in the world, the difference at Bamboo King Vina factory is that it does not use chemicals and carbonizes cellulose, helping to improve the termite and insect resistance of bamboo and rattan materials. Through the pressure denaturation furnaces for 6 to 8 hours, the strength of bamboo and rattan will be increased. Excess materials are used to put into the chopper to make activated carbon, contributing to environmental protection.
Vietnam is currently the world’s second largest supplier of energy wood pellets, after the US. Most of the pellets produced in Vietnam are exported to the two markets of Korea and Japan as input materials for electricity production. The market demand for renewable products is increasingly expanding, so many Thanh Hoa enterprises are also approaching and expanding production of wood pellets.
Since the beginning of 2022, Van Lang Yufukuya Co., Ltd. (Nghi Son Economic Zone) has invested more than 50 billion VND to renovate the entire production line and machinery with 6 press heads with modern technology, increasing the production capacity of pellets to 500,000 tons/year. 100% of the company's products are currently exported to the markets of Korea, Japan, EU... with long-term contracts signed from 1 to 5 years.
"Japan and other advanced countries currently have a great demand for renewable energy development to achieve the goal of reducing emissions and protecting the environment and climate. Therefore, we are continuing to research and apply new technologies in production, while focusing on clean input materials to continue increasing output. The company is also implementing cooperation with satellite factories in the districts, and in the near future we plan for satellite factories to cooperate with households to apply for certificates such as FSC, PTFC. This is not only beneficial for forest growers but also for the entire production system, because certified products are highly appreciated and have better prices," added Mr. Lang Van In, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Van Lang Yufukuya Co., Ltd.
In early 2025, Thanh Hoa Bioenergy Joint Stock Company started construction of a Bioenergy Wood Pellet Factory in Thuong Xuan District with a total investment of VND 339 billion, with a production scale of 180,000 tons of products/year from the main raw material of acacia trees. After production, the products will be exported to the markets of Japan, Korea, EU and consumed domestically as fuel for the thermal power and industrial steam industries.
Notably, among the 17 foreign direct investment projects approved in 2024, the staBOO Thanh Hoa OSB Bamboo Board Factory Project located in Thiet Ong Commune (Ba Thuoc) is also expected to contribute to the high-tech output of the forest products processing industry. This is considered a large and important project for the locality with a total investment of about 3,200 billion VND, along with the participation and cooperation of the Swiss staBOO Holdings AG Company, which is expected to help bring Thanh Hoa bamboo products to the world market.
It is known that staBOO Holdings AG will use modern technology, reduce carbon emissions, meet the requirements of green and sustainable development of Vietnam and bring Vietnamese bamboo products to the world. This is also the largest investment project of a European Union (EU) enterprise in Thanh Hoa province, opening up new cooperation horizons for Thanh Hoa and major investors from the EU.
In Thanh Hoa province, there are currently more than 350 enterprises and establishments producing and processing forest products, of which only about 10 establishments have invested in modern machinery and carried out deep processing. Moreover, the raw material sources of the forest product processing industry, especially the wood industry, are still limited, depending heavily on imported raw materials; the connection between processing factories and raw material areas is not tight. The trend of attracting modern technology enterprises with development strategies associated with raw material areas will be an effective and sustainable direction, aiming for high value of the industry in the coming time.
