A famous British travel magazine rated sticky rice as "the quintessence of Vietnamese cuisine", and listed it among Hanoi's 10 outstanding dishes for vegetarians.

Condé Nast Traveler, a travel magazine based in London, England, commented that Hanoi cuisine can be interesting for vegetarians as it offers diverse flavors by using many herbs, vegetables, and fresh fruits. Below is a list of 10 dishes for vegetarians with criteria such as: easy to eat, popular, diverse flavors and easy to find in every restaurant, according to suggestions from culinary experts and diners.

Sticky rice, vegetarian vermicelli with grilled pork, and banh xeo are the main dishes for vegetarians in Hanoi. Sticky rice is eaten by locals for breakfast and is available at every sidewalk stall. According to Condé Nast Traveller , whether eaten in a small, take-out bag or in a hearty restaurant style, sticky rice is always "the embodiment of Vietnamese culinary quintessence". There are many types of sticky rice such as: white sticky rice, peanut sticky rice, sticky rice with grilled pork, sticky rice with gac fruit, corn sticky rice, coconut sticky rice, and sticky rice. In addition to eating vegetarian food with sesame and peanuts, Vietnamese people often like to eat it with savory dishes such as ham, eggs, braised pork, pork floss, and pate.

Vegetarian vermicelli with grilled pork is described as having "an attractive and eye-catching aroma" and "as delicious as vermicelli with grilled pork", "suitable for vegetarians". Banh xeo impresses with its eye-catching color, crispy crust, and filling of soft, sweet vegetables and rich spices.

Other vegetarian dishes mentioned include tomato sauce tofu, a dish described as "evoking childhood memories for most Vietnamese people". Crispy fried tofu served with tomato sauce, green onions, and served with white rice. Stir-fried morning glory with garlic is second on the list of suggestions, described as "a rustic dish that still shows its attractiveness and deliciousness". Morning glory can be eaten alone or combined with main dishes.

The two types of salad mentioned are banana flower and green papaya. Both of these salads consist of banana flower or papaya cut into thin strips, mixed with sweet and sour fish sauce, herbs, and carrots to create a refreshing, pleasant flavor.

For desserts and drinks, Condé Nast Traveler recommends enjoying banana sweet soup, banh troi (rice balls with glutinous rice balls) and iced milk coffee. These are all famous Vietnamese specialties, loved by locals.
