According to a document attached to Ford's electric car patent registered since 2023, the American car brand is developing technology to simulate a manual transmission for electric vehicles, even though this type of vehicle does not actually need a gearbox.

This document, titled “Electric Vehicle Gear Shifting Mechanism,” describes the gear shift lever and components that the driver will use, just like on a conventional manual transmission vehicle.

Ford's electric cars could come with manual transmissions.

The drawing shows that this Ford electric car manual transmission has two types of gear shifting layouts, including H-shaped gear shifting like on a traditional 6-speed gearbox and sequential up/down gear shifting. In particular, Ford also added the idea of a “virtual path”, meaning that the gearbox is not fixed but can be customized into 4, 6 or even 7 levels, depending on the preferences of the user or the car manufacturer.

The document also mentions the possibility of using haptic feedback technology (similar to the vibration feedback on the iPhone) to simulate the feeling of holding a stick-type gear lever. Thus, the simulated manual transmission in Ford's electric car could allow the driver to choose the number of gears, the reverse position, the weight of the lever when pushing, and the "vibration" when shifting.

The simulated manual transmission in Ford's electric car will likely allow the driver to choose the gear, reverse position, weight when pushing the lever, and even the "vibration" when shifting.

In fact, Ford is not the only company that wants to bring manual transmission to electric cars . Previously, on the Ioniq 5 N electric sports car launched last year, Hyundai equipped the N e-shift and N Active Sound + systems, simulating the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission of internal combustion engine cars by controlling the torque of the electric motor, using a sound system to simulate engine noise and adding a vibration feature to create a slight jerking feeling like when the car changes gears. In addition, Toyota has also announced a similar idea since 2022. Toyota's system also has a fake clutch pedal, helping the driver fully feel the "clutch, gear shifting" like a gasoline car.
