According to Neowin , X has taken the unprecedented step of blocking all searches for Taylor Swift for the time being, starting on January 27. This information was confirmed by X's head of business operations, Joe Benarroch, in a statement to the Wall Street Journal . According to Benarroch, it is only a temporary action and was taken out of an abundance of caution because the company prioritizes safety in this matter.
Deepfake images of Taylor Swift are flooding the internet
Benarroch added that Swift fans shared real images of the singer on X after the fake photos began appearing on the social network. They also tried to report accounts that were spreading deepfakes.
In the wake of X’s decision to block all searches for Taylor Swift, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella weighed in on the flood of AI-generated images of the singer in an interview with NBC. He said people need to take action to make the online world safer, so companies need to step up their game.
Notably, a report from 404Media claims that the deepfake photos of Taylor Swift that went viral on X were created in part by a team using Microsoft Designer — an AI-based image-making tool. Microsoft told NBC that its own investigation into the situation is now underway, adding that it has taken steps to enhance text filtering prompts and address abuse of the company's services in the incident.
