Ms. Joelle Pineau, Vice President of Artificial Intelligence (AI) research at Meta, announced that she will leave the company on May 30.

This information was posted by her on LinkedIn on April 1.

Pineau's decision to leave comes amid challenges facing Meta.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made AI a top priority, pouring billions of dollars into the company to gain a lead over rivals like OpenAI and Google.

Mr. Zuckerberg aims to develop an AI assistant with more than 1 billion users and aims for artificial general intelligence (AGI) - a system capable of thinking and acting similar to humans.

“As the world changes dramatically, the AI race intensifies, and Meta enters a new chapter, it is time to make room for others to continue this work,” Pineau wrote on LinkedIn. “I will be watching from afar, confident that Meta is well-positioned to build the world’s best AI systems and responsibly bring them to the lives of billions of people.”

Ms. Pineau is one of Meta's leading AI researchers and has led the FAIR fundamental AI research unit since 2023.

She oversees cutting-edge research in computer science, much of which has been applied to Meta's core products.

Pineau joined Meta in 2017 and headed the company's AI research lab in Montreal.

She is also a professor of computer science at McGill University and co-director of the school's reasoning and machine learning research lab.

Pineau has contributed to the development of many important projects, including the Llama family of open-source AI models and PyTorch software for AI developers.

Pineau’s resignation announcement comes just weeks before Meta’s LlamaCon AI conference, which takes place on April 29. Meta is expected to unveil the latest version of its Llama model at the event.

Meta’s chief product officer Chris Cox previously revealed that Llama 4 will play a key role in developing AI agents – the latest trend in generative AI. CNBC also reported that Meta plans to launch a standalone app for its Meta AI chatbot.

Ms. Pineau has not revealed her next plans, only saying that she will take time to observe and reflect before starting a new journey./.
