According to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on September 4, at the headquarters of the Singaporean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet and Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Singapore Albert Chua co-chaired the 16th Vietnam - Singapore Political Consultation.

Strengthening Vietnam – Singapore economic ties

At the event, the two sides agreed to closely coordinate and promote the effective implementation of agreements reached by the two countries' leaders. At the same time, they will prepare well for high-level exchanges and contacts, first of all, the annual meeting mechanism between the two Prime Ministers.

In addition, strengthening the connection between the two economies, deepening cooperation in other important fields such as education, culture, tourism, people-to-people exchange, etc., will contribute to soon bringing the relationship between the two countries to a new height.

The two sides affirmed that they will coordinate to promote the implementation of the Digital Economy - Green Economy Partnership and the Framework Agreement on Connecting the Two Economies to create breakthroughs in new areas such as circular economy, digital transformation, innovation, green energy, sustainable development, etc.

Economic cooperation remains one of the important foundations in the bilateral relationship. Singapore is the second largest investor in Vietnam with 3,742 projects, totaling over 80 billion USD. These achievements include important contributions from 18 Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIPs) in 13 provinces and cities of Vietnam.

Hoping to have more new generation, smart and green VSIP zones in Vietnam, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet suggested that Singapore continue to support Vietnam in improving the quality of human resources, especially strategic level officials. At the same time, maintain and increase the number of scholarships for Vietnam.

The Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs also asked Singapore to train human resources for the digital transformation process, especially in the fields of cybersecurity, data flow migration, artificial intelligence, and support Vietnam in researching and building a model of a national data science innovation center.

Deputy Minister Albert Chua hopes that the two sides will coordinate to promote cooperation in new areas such as clean energy, including wind power; and carbon credit exchange to achieve the goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

Pleased with the news that Vietnam has become the largest rice supplier to Singapore in the first 6 months of 2024, Deputy Minister Albert Chua suggested that the two sides strengthen cooperation in the import and export of agricultural products, contributing to ensuring food security.

He also suggested that the two countries promote aviation connectivity to develop economy, trade and tourism; affirmed that Singapore will effectively expand management training programs for Vietnam such as "Management for Leaders" or "Potential Leaders".

Continued coordination in ASEAN

The two sides agreed to maintain consultation and actively coordinate with ASEAN member countries in the process of building strategies to implement the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, and further promote ASEAN's central role in regional issues.

At the same time, promote ASEAN solidarity, unity and sustainable development, improve and innovate working methods towards a self-reliant ASEAN that adapts to future opportunities and challenges.

The two sides also shared their assessments and determination to build the East Sea into a sea of ​​peace, cooperation and development, together with ASEAN countries to seriously and fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), striving to soon achieve a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC) of quality, effectiveness and efficiency, in accordance with international law and the 1982 UNCLOS.

Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet also asked Singapore to pay attention, support and attend at a high level at the ASEAN Future Forum 2025 in Vietnam to exchange ideas and initiatives to support regional cooperation.

On this occasion, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet visited Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

At the meeting, Mr. Vivian Balakrishnan expressed his admiration for Vietnam's outstanding and strong socio-economic development achievements since its independence.

He suggested that the two Foreign Ministries closely coordinate with relevant ministries and sectors of the two countries to contribute to promoting all areas of cooperation, especially connecting the two economies and new areas, and soon bring the bilateral relationship to a new height.
