The organs of the dead in Vietnam are buried in the ground or burned to ashes, which is a waste, because this source of organs can save many patients on the brink of death.
On the afternoon of June 14, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Young Physicians Association, the Vietnam Organ and Tissue Donation Campaign Association and the Vietnam Medical Trade Union signed a joint program to promote and mobilize registration for organ and tissue donation, “Giving is forever”.
At the signing ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Tien, President of the Vietnam Association for Organ and Tissue Donation, said that the demand for organs from brain-dead sources is currently very high, but the supply is very scarce, and the rate of organ donation registration after brain death in Vietnam is the lowest in the world. Therefore, people registering to donate organs and tissues upon death has a particularly great significance in saving the lives of patients with serious illnesses that only organ transplants can bring them life.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, 2023 is the year Vietnam has the highest number of organ transplants ever with 1,000 cases, but up to 95% of the organs are from living donors, only 5% of the donors are brain dead, while other countries have 80-95% of the organs from brain dead donors.
“The organs of the dead in Vietnam are buried in the ground or burned to ashes, which is a waste, because this source of organs can save many patients on the brink of death,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Tien. She also added that at Viet Duc Hospital, there are at least 1,000 brain-dead deaths per year. This is also the hospital that promotes organ donation after brain death the best in the country, but each year there are only about 10 brain-dead organ donors.
Therefore, the model of establishing an organ donation advisory team at hospitals is very necessary and if every hospital has an advisory team, in the future, the number of people donating organs after brain death in Vietnam will increase.
The signing ceremony demonstrates the pioneering role of the Vietnam Medical Trade Union and the Vietnam Young Physicians Association in implementing the Prime Minister's call for organ and tissue donation, which has profound humanitarian and humanitarian significance.
According to Ms. Pham Thanh Binh, President of the Vietnam Medical Trade Union, the country currently has more than 500,000 medical staff and employees. If we mobilize all of them to register to donate tissues and organs, this would be a very large number.
According to the agreement, the Vietnam Health Sector Trade Union and the Young Doctors Association will promote propaganda to officials and members about the humane meaning of organ and tissue donation. At the same time, they will organize honors, gratitude, and mobilize resources to encourage and care for living donors and their families after brain death.
