NDO - Professor Richard Henry Friend, University of Cambridge (UK); Millennium Technology Award 2010; Chairman of the VinFuture Award Council revealed that the number of nominations for the VinFuture Award 2024 has increased enormously and the quality is always very good. Among them, Vietnam also has a nomination.

Professor Richard Henry Friend, Chairman of the VinFuture Prize Council, spoke to the press about some information about this year's award season before the "Science for Life" panel discussion.

"We got a huge number of nominations"

Professor Richard Henry Friend said that entering the 2024 season, the VinFuture Prize has been very successful and has been nominated by many people from all over the world.

He assessed that the VinFuture team in Hanoi had worked extremely hard and enthusiastically to be able to select many nominees for the award with a huge number of nominations, much more than most other international science awards. And the winners were always excellent people.

"We always find enough good quality candidates to select the more deserving ones to award. The number of nominations is always sufficient and the quality is very good. We have always found the judging to be very good. I hope that the awards will tell positive stories about what we can do to make life better," he revealed.

According to the Chairman of the VinFuture Prize Council, Vietnam also has a nomination in 2024. However, he also emphasized that VinFuture is a global award, and the difference of the award is that it tries to connect developments in scientific research that no one has anticipated or predicted with the impacts that we want to create in real life.

Therefore, the award council had many difficulties in finding worthy nominations that accurately reflected which regions in the world had very clear and outstanding developments in scientific research and innovation activities.

Commenting on this year’s theme of “Resilient Breakthrough”, Professor Richard Henry Friend said that sustainability is an essential part of maintaining a good life. This is reflected in the nominations, as demonstrated by some of the awards in previous years.

Professor Richard Henry Friend shares that sustainability is an essential part of keeping life good.

Young people should be encouraged to pursue scientific careers.

Professor Richard Henry Friend cites a lot of the scientific research that is done in universities, mainly in terms of training. It is about equipping young scientists and engineers with transferable skills. If you look at places that have been very successful around the world, the most valuable asset is smart young people who have been well trained. If the conditions are right, if the skills are there, the people are there, unexpected opportunities will always arise.

Therefore, the content shared during VinFuture Science and Technology Week is an opportunity for the world's leading scientists to tell some good stories to many young scientists.

“We bring scientists who have made things happen to Vietnam and this is where the dialogue takes place. We also know that Vietnam is a very important emerging high-tech country with rapid development in key industrial sectors that are making a difference. This provides opportunities for young scientists in Vietnam,” Professor Richard said.

Through scientific weeks like this, the contact between Vietnamese scientists and scientists around the world is increasing. Professor Richard also expressed his excitement that there are now many Vietnamese scientists returning home when they have great opportunities at home.

To create a breakthrough in the era of advancement, Professor Richard Henry Friend emphasized: If you look at places that have been very successful around the world, the most valuable asset is intelligent young people who have been properly trained. Therefore, we need to set a vision of what is possible and encourage young people to pursue scientific careers not simply for the sake of pure research but towards applying them to life.

The professor also expressed his belief that Vietnam will also become a country with advanced science and technology in the near future.

"We also evaluate Vietnam with a very objective and optimistic view. We see that there are many young researchers and young scientists in Vietnam and they are very intelligent and excellent. These are the people who we firmly believe will create a bright future for Vietnam. I am also very happy to have had the opportunity to work and cooperate effectively and happily with young scientists," the Chairman of the VinFuture Prize Council shared.
