Students take a capacity assessment test to enter grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted in 2023

According to information provided by Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, during a working session with the Committee for Culture and Social Affairs of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council on primary school enrollment, it is expected that in the 2024-2025 school year, 6 secondary schools will organize 6th grade enrollment in the form of capacity assessment surveys.

Schools with enrollment needs many times higher than quotas

According to Mr. Nam, these 6 secondary schools are considered advanced schools - international integration or schools with high enrollment registration demand many times higher than enrollment quota. These are the schools:

  • Tran Quoc Toan 1 Secondary School, Thu Duc City;
  • Hoa Lu Secondary School, Thu Duc City;
  • Binh Tho Secondary School, Thu Duc City;
  • Nguyen Huu Tho Secondary School, District 7;
  • Nguyen An Khuong Secondary School, Hoc Mon District;
  • Tran Dai Nghia Secondary - High School, District 1 (project under construction).

Mr. Le Hoai Nam said that the city expanded from 2 schools in the previous school year to 6 schools to organize capacity assessment surveys in 6th grade enrollment this year based on the consolidated document 03/VBHN-BGDĐT on the regulations on junior high school and high school enrollment issued by the Ministry of Education and Training on May 3, 2019. Accordingly, in cases where educational institutions have more students registering for 6th grade than the enrollment quota, the Department of Education and Training will guide the implementation of the enrollment plan by the method of selection or combining selection with testing and evaluating students' capacity.

Therefore, from the 2023-2024 school year, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee allows a survey to enroll 6th grade students in schools that are considered advanced - internationally integrated schools; schools with students registering for 6th grade enrollment exceeding the enrollment quota. Localities will develop appropriate enrollment plans based on the actual situation. Therefore, Tran Quoc Toan 1 Secondary School (Thu Duc City) implements this form of enrollment together with Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School (District 1).

By the 2024-2025 school year, the Department of Education and Training of District 7, Hoc Mon District and Thu Duc City have proposed plans to recruit more schools with high enrollment needs much higher than the enrollment quota in the area.

This year, Ho Chi Minh City plans to have 6 secondary schools conduct the entrance exam for grade 6.

Why do many schools in Thu Duc City conduct surveys?

Of the 6 secondary schools that are expected to enroll 6th grade students using the competency assessment survey, 3 are located in Thu Duc City. Mr. Nguyen Thai Vinh Nguyen, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Thu Duc City, said that after the 2023-2024 school year, 6th grade enrollment will be conducted using the survey at Tran Quoc Toan 1 Secondary School. By the 2024-2025 school year, the district will develop a plan and expand to 2 more secondary schools, Hoa Lu and Binh Tho, bringing the total to 3 schools.

Mr. Nguyen Thai Vinh Nguyen said that the three secondary schools mentioned above are schools that always have a large number of students wishing to study but the quota is not high. "If we consider admission based on math scores, Vietnamese at primary level as well as English certificates, it will be very difficult to ensure. The assessment of students depends on each teacher, each school and at the same time, students are assessed based on their abilities and qualities, so there is no common ground for comparison. If we take the results of foreign language and IT certificates, the pressure will be on students to participate in certificate exams, etc. Therefore, organizing a survey will help schools select truly excellent and suitable students."
