Low blood pressure, high risk

Since childhood, Ms. Do Thi H. (35 years old, Hanoi) has had low blood pressure, so she subjectively thought that low blood pressure was not very dangerous. Recently, while working, she felt dizzy, fainted and lost consciousness. When she went to the emergency room at the hospital, the doctor concluded that she had a stroke caused by low blood pressure.

Professor Pham Gia Khai, former president of the Vietnam Cardiovascular Association, said that people often pay attention to high blood pressure and pay little attention to low blood pressure, but in fact low blood pressure is a fairly common health problem in the community.

Previously, low blood pressure was often concentrated in women with a rate of about 30 times higher than in men. But recently, 5-7% of adults have low blood pressure and it is increasing in young people.

In particular, patients' understanding of low blood pressure is still very limited. Studies show that more than 70% of patients do not know they have low blood pressure, and more than 80% of patients ignore the symptoms of the disease.

According to Professor Khai, normal blood pressure is usually 120/80 mmHg, below 100/60 mmHg is considered low blood pressure.

Low blood pressure not only makes the patient weak and ineffective at work, but also causes dangerous complications no less than high blood pressure.

Low blood pressure is the cause of stroke similar to high blood pressure (this rate accounts for about 10-15%). 30% of people with cerebral infarction, 25% of people with myocardial infarction due to low blood pressure.

Especially affects the brain and nerves, because when the patient has low blood pressure many times, the function of the nervous system will decline, at the same time the body will not adjust in time to provide nutrients to organs such as the brain, heart, kidneys... causing damage to these organs.

People with persistent low blood pressure are more likely to develop dementia than normal people.

It is dangerous when blood pressure drops suddenly or is accompanied by signs and symptoms: dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, difficulty concentrating, opening eyes, nausea, cold, sweating, pale skin, rapid breathing, shallow breathing, fatigue, depression, very thirsty...

Be careful when taking medicine

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Duc Hai, 108 Central Military Hospital warns that unlike high blood pressure, low blood pressure is not a disease, but rather a blood pressure condition, a symptom found in many different diseases.

Treatment depends on the underlying condition causing low blood pressure. For example, in the case of overdose of antihypertensive drugs, the drug and dosage must be adjusted;

Blood pressure due to endocrine diseases must be treated; blood pressure due to dehydration and electrolyte loss (in cases of diarrhea and vomiting) must be supplemented with water and electrolytes combined with blood pressure-raising drugs.

In fact, many people think they have low blood pressure and take blood pressure medication, leading to unpredictable disasters. It is necessary to have a comprehensive examination to detect the diseases that cause these symptoms and treat them promptly. Avoid taking blood pressure medications regularly and for a long time, which can lead to adverse side effects.

Acupressure has the effect of preventing and treating high blood pressure - Illustration photo

Doctor Quach Tuan Vinh, chairman of the Hoan Kiem Oriental Medicine Association, advises patients at risk of low blood pressure to perform basic acupressure to treat low blood pressure.

The way to impact the acupoint is usually to use the tip of the thumb to press and massage perpendicular to the skin above the acupoint. Each acupoint is pressed for 1 - 2 minutes. Press and massage 1 - 2 times a day. 10 - 15 days is a course of treatment.

As for the philtrum acupoint, because the acupoint area is very small, you can use the tip of a ballpoint pen, pencil, or toothpick to stimulate the acupoint when the patient faints or is in a coma due to low blood pressure. The acupoints include:

- Baihui: Located at the concave point right on the top of the human head, on the face, is the intersection of the line connecting the two tops of the ear rims and the vertical line of the body.

In traditional oriental medicine, Bai Hui is used to treat headaches, insomnia, nervous breakdown...

- Sea of Qi: Located on the straight line connecting the navel to the upper edge of the pubic bone, 1.5 inches from the navel, it is the sea of Qi. The sea of Qi has the effect of regulating Qi, benefiting the origin, nourishing the kidneys, replenishing deficiency, harmonizing blood, regulating the meridians, warming the lower burner, and eliminating dampness and turbidity.

- Quan Nguyen: The acupoint is located 3 inches below the navel (a unit of biological length measurement on each person's body), 2 inches above the pubic bone. Has the effect of nourishing the kidneys, strengthening the body, replenishing qi, restoring yang, warming and regulating blood, sperm, eliminating cold and dampness, increasing strength, and preventing disease.

- Neiguan: Located 2 inches above the wrist, between the tendons of the large and small palmar muscles. Has the effect of calming the mind, sedating, regulating qi, relieving pain, and clearing the pericardium.

Indications: palpitations in the precordial region, chest and hip pain, flank pain, stomach pain, vomiting, hiccups, insomnia, epilepsy, hysteria. According to modern medicine, Neiguan is an acupoint that has the effect of stabilizing blood pressure, used in diseases of high or low blood pressure.

- Thai Khe : Location is the midpoint between the line connecting the posterior edge of the inner ankle and the inner edge of the Achilles tendon, the gap between the Achilles tendon at the back. Has the effect of nourishing kidney yin, strengthening yang, clearing heat, strengthening tendons and bones...

- Sanyinjiao : Located close to the posterior-medial border of the tibia, the anterior border of the long flexor digitorum longus and posterior tibialis muscle, measuring three inches from the top of the inner ankle. Has the effect of nourishing yin, strengthening the spleen, clearing stagnant qi, transforming dampness, dispelling wind, regulating blood, relieving the liver, and benefiting the kidneys.

- Philtrum : Located at the junction of the upper 1/3 and lower 2/3 of the philtrum groove, in the middle of the groove bottom. Has the effect of opening the orifices, clearing heat, calming the mind, dispelling wind evil, eliminating internal heat, benefiting the back and spine, and regulating the adverse qi of yin and yang. Often used in emergency treatment of fainting, coma, and cardiovascular collapse.

How to prevent stroke due to low blood pressure

To prevent this, patients should not stay up late, keep warm when sleeping, do not go out in the hot sun, change positions step by step, do not climb high, maintain gentle and moderate movements such as walking, and use a low pillow when sleeping.

In particular, people aged 50 and over need to monitor their blood pressure regularly because they are at high risk of developing low blood pressure.

When suffering from low blood pressure, you should eat many meals a day (4-5 meals) with foods rich in protein such as meat, fish, shrimp, crab, eggs, milk to help increase blood pressure. Drinking more coffee, strong green tea with biscuits, 1-2 pieces of bread with butter or cheese is also very beneficial for raising blood pressure and health.

Limit alcohol, beer, alcoholic beverages, bitter melon, egg whites, orange juice, purple sweet potatoes, seaweed, chili, kiwi fruit... foods that cause low blood pressure.

People with low blood pressure who experience dizziness, lightheadedness, or lightheadedness should go to a medical facility for timely examination.
