TPO - According to the Department of Construction of Thua Thien-Hue (TT-Hue), the system of 5 lime kilns attached to the material transfer tower of the old Long Tho Cement Factory (formerly Long Tho Lime Factory from the French colonial period) is a typical architectural work of the early period of Hue's industry more than 100 years ago, so it needs to be renovated, preserved, and its value promoted.
The Department of Construction of Thua Thien Hue province said it has sent a report to the Provincial People's Committee asking for direction on renovating and renovating some items in the land where the old Long Tho Cement Factory used to exist (Thuy Bieu ward, Hue city). |
In 2021, Long Tho Joint Stock Company relocated its cement factory to Thuy Phuong ward, Huong Thuy town. The old factory land was transferred to the Land Fund Development Center of Thua Thien Hue province for management. |
Currently, in the old Long Tho Cement Factory, there is still a water tower and a system of 5 ancient lime kilns attached to a material transfer tower. Of which, the system of 5 lime kilns arranged next to each other in an L shape, is evaluated by the Department of Construction as a typical architectural work of the early industrial period of Hue, so it is proposed to be preserved, and at the same time, the Hue City People's Committee is assigned to develop a plan for renovation and restoration to promote historical values, introduce to the people and tourists. |

Documents stored on the Long Tho Joint Stock Company's information page show that the Long Tho Lime Factory was built by the private construction company Bogaert (France) in 1896 at the foot of Long Tho hill, on the south bank of the Perfume River, opposite Thien Mu Pagoda. The factory is about 7km west of the center of Hue City, between Nguyet Bieu village and Duong Xuan village (now Thuy Bieu ward and Duc ward, Hue City). |
The products produced by the factory were intended to meet the demand for materials when the French colonialists stepped up the construction of infrastructure to serve the ruling government in the Central region after 1885. By 1915, Bogaert's Long Tho Lime Factory was merged into the Long Tho Lime Company. After that, the factory stopped operating several times. |
By 1976, the Long Tho Cement Factory was restored. Here, the government invested in building a vertical kiln cement production line with a designed capacity of 20,000 tons/year. |
By the early 2000s, Long Tho Cement Factory was identified as an environmental “black spot” and was listed as a serious polluting facility that had to be relocated according to the Prime Minister’s Decision. However, due to the company’s difficulties in compensation for site clearance when moving to a new location, it was not until 2021 that Long Tho Cement Factory was completely relocated out of Thuy Bieu Ward, Hue City. |
Also in 2021, while still in office as Chairman of the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province, Mr. Phan Ngoc Tho inspected the area of the old Long Tho Cement Factory and requested functional units to accept the current status and have a plan to manage the site to avoid encroachment by people. |
Here, Mr. Phan Ngoc Tho also requested that historical factors should be carefully considered to study the preservation and promotion of the value of the cement factory, which is over 100 years old - a historical vestige of the early industrial development period of the locality. The People's Committee of Hue City is currently assigned the responsibility of developing a plan to renovate and renovate the system of 5 lime kilns attached to the material transfer tower to serve tourism development, educate the younger generation, and promote historical values... |
