Misconceptions about symptoms of cerebral anemia
Specialist Doctor II Vo Don (Tam Anh General Hospital) said that cerebral anemia is a common mechanism due to acute brain damage when blood flow to the brain is reduced. Cerebral anemia is a medical emergency; if left untreated, there is a high possibility of cerebral infarction or brain disease due to lack of oxygen and ischemia. At that time, the patient may die or be at risk of permanent disability.
Many people often have the misconception that strokes only occur in winter, when temperatures are low and the body is susceptible to colds. In fact, people are also susceptible to strokes in the summer due to erratic weather and the large temperature difference between day and night.
On hot days, high humidity causes fatigue and dehydration, which can cause blood clotting/clotting disorders and strokes, especially in middle-aged and elderly people due to aging of the body's organs, so adaptation to the environment is not as fast as in young people.
On the other hand, to counteract the increase in body temperature due to the temperature of the environment (or the increase in temperature due to exercise, playing sports), the body regulates temperature adaptation by increasing sweat secretion to cool down. Sweating leads to the body losing water and salt, leading to a decrease in the circulating volume in the body. If water and salt are not replenished in time, it is very easy to cause hypotension, cerebral ischemia, and transient cerebrovascular accident.
Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the world and the third leading cause of death in Vietnam.
Preventing cerebral anemia in young people
Stroke is common in the elderly. However, many hospitals have recorded cases of young people being hospitalized due to cerebral ischemia and stroke. Stroke in the elderly is often due to atherosclerosis, cerebral vascular stenosis or hypertension; stroke in young people often occurs suddenly and has common causes such as: Cerebral vascular malformations - anatomical abnormalities of the cerebral blood vessels such as cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous fistulas, hemangiomas; cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmias, heart valve disease, leading to the formation of blood clots in the heart chambers, blood clotting diseases...
Nowadays, many young people are sedentary, consume a lot of alcohol, beer, greasy, fatty foods, low in fiber, fast foods, and are often stressed at work..., which increases the risk of cerebral anemia, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stress, diabetes...
Worryingly, stroke symptoms in young people can be different from those in older people, so family members are often subjective, do not take the patient to the emergency room early, and do not know how to provide first aid before taking the patient to the hospital.
In many cases, patients start with severe headaches, vomiting, stiff neck, blurred vision... but family members subjectively perform first aid at home with folk remedies such as scraping, pricking blood from 10 fingers, taking cold medicine..., only when the disease becomes severe are they hospitalized, at which point recovery is very difficult, often leaving serious sequelae.
“Symptoms of cerebral anemia that have not yet progressed to a severe level will manifest as transient headaches, nausea, numbness in the limbs or face... Most of the symptoms of cerebral anemia will disappear after 10-20 minutes. Relatives need to learn how to treat the patient so that they do not fall into a dangerous state. When the above symptoms appear, people can place the patient on a flat, airy surface, with the head low, and loosen clothing so that blood can circulate to the brain better. Immediately after that, quickly take the patient to the nearest medical facility for a doctor to examine and treat early. In addition, relatives need to closely monitor the patient's lifestyle and diet and support the patient with cerebral anemia to stay away from factors that can easily lead to stroke such as bathing at night, staying up late, stress..." - specialist doctor II Vo Don recommends.
