Now, science has figured out exactly how many cups of coffee you should drink per day to reap the most benefits.
People who drink 2-3 cups of coffee reap the most benefits
New research, just published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism , has discovered the number of cups of coffee you should drink per day to reduce your risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke and diabetes, according to NBC News.
The study, conducted by scientists from Suzhou University (China) and Swedish experts, analyzed the coffee and tea drinking habits of 188,000 people aged 37 to 73. Participants reported on the amount of coffee and tea they usually drank each day.
Of these, 172,000 drank caffeinated coffee or tea. None of them had a history of cardiometabolic disease, including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, or heart attack or stroke, when the study began.
Researchers followed up with participants after about 12 years.
Drinking 2 - 3 cups of coffee or up to 3 cups of tea a day is best for your health, reducing both heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.
The results found that consuming around 200 - 300 mg of caffeine per day - equivalent to drinking 2 - 3 cups of coffee or up to 3 cups of tea per day - was best for health, reducing both heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and diabetes.
Notably, people who drank two to three cups of coffee reaped the most benefits — reducing their risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes by nearly 50 percent. While those who drank tea or both tea and coffee reduced their risk by 40 percent, according to NBC News.
And among tea drinkers, three cups (8 ounces per cup) per day is best; drinking more than this reduces the benefits.
Dr. Luke Laffin, director of the Blood Pressure Disorders Center at the Cleveland Clinic (USA), although not involved in the study, also said that keeping things in moderation is best. And a few cups of coffee a day is an effective level.
