The US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), recording at 104.27 points.
The dollar strengthened in the last session. However, the greenback is at risk of falling as data from the US showed stronger-than-expected job growth in March, potentially delaying the Federal Reserve's expected interest rate cut this year.
Nonfarm payrolls increased by 303,000 last month, above economists' forecasts of 200,000 jobs.
The dollar index was up 0.048% at 104.27 after a volatile week. The DXY had a week of falling from a five-month high to a two-week low after U.S. services growth unexpectedly slowed.
The probability of a rate cut in June fell to 54.5% following the jobs data, according to CME Group’s FedWatch tool. That’s expected to provide broad support for the dollar. That’s followed comments Thursday from Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, a nonvoting member of this year’s policy-setting committee. The Fed official said that a rate cut may not be necessary in 2024 if inflation continues to slow.
The Yen weakened 0.14% as the exchange rate rose again to 151.540 USD/JPY. Former Japanese Vice Minister of Finance Tatsuo Yamazaki analyzed that the Yen surpassing 152 USD/JPY would force Japan to intervene in the currency market.
Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki on Friday reiterated the government's determination to take "appropriate action" in the face of the yen's sharp decline.
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said the BOJ could "respond with monetary policy" if a weaker yen affects the Japanese economy "in ways that are hard to ignore." Inflation in Japan could accelerate "from summer to fall" as workers get higher wages, the BOJ chief said, hinting at another interest rate hike.
Elsewhere, the euro was steady at 1.0837 EUR/USD, while the pound fell 0.04% to 1.264 GBP/USD.
