Potential Stock Opportunities After US Tax Changes

NDO - Vietnam's stock market fell sharply, with the VN-Index losing 185 points in three sessions after the US announced an increase in import tariffs on Vietnam to 46%. Shares of export industries such as textiles, seafood and industrial parks fell from around 20%, but the news of a 90-day tax delay has created changes.

On April 2, right after the US announced an increase in import tariffs on Vietnam to 46%, the Vietnamese stock market fell sharply, with the VN-Index losing 185 points in three sessions. Shares of export industries such as textiles, seafood and industrial parks fell by about 20%.

In a small office in Hanoi, Nguyen Van Hung, an investor with 10 years of experience, is examining his stock portfolio with a thoughtful expression. In just the first few days of April 2025, the total value of his stocks has decreased by nearly 30%. Mr. Hung shared: "I have not decided whether to keep or sell, because the market is changing too quickly."

Unlike Mr. Hung, Ms. Tran Minh Anh, a freelance marketing employee, said: "Low stock prices are an opportunity for me to buy, but I have not decided which industry stocks to buy."

However, after consecutive declines, the Vietnamese stock market reacted positively immediately after Mr. Trump's surprise announcement of a 90-day suspension of tariffs on imported goods. In the session on April 9, the VN-Index increased sharply by 73 points, with more than 300 stocks reaching their ceiling prices. In the session on April 10, although it only increased by 54.12 points, the entire market was bustling, with transaction value reaching more than VND40,000 billion (nearly 8 times higher than the previous session).

Investors are wondering which stocks to choose.

Faced with the fluctuations of the stock market, Mr. Tran Minh Hoang, Director of Research and Analysis, VCBS Securities Company, commented: “The trend of stock investment will be strongly differentiated, when the business prospects of industries will have big changes. Investment cash flow will quickly shift from businesses that are negatively affected by tariffs to industries and businesses that are still maintaining good business results. First, investment cash flow will seek out industries and businesses that still have good business prospects and are less affected by tariffs such as: Banking, securities, retail, infrastructure construction and utilities such as: electricity, water, pharmaceuticals".

According to experts' analysis, the calculations of Mr. Hung and Ms. Minh Anh are relatively consistent with the two approaches to the stock market in recent days.

Accordingly, with the desire to preserve capital, Mr. Hung can look for stocks of industries that are less affected by increased import taxes into the United States such as banking, domestic retail, or healthcare... which have a lot of room for development in the domestic market.

As for Ms. Minh Anh, with the mindset of being ahead of the trend, she is considering buying stocks in the technology, renewable energy, or processed agricultural industries..., where businesses are taking advantage of the digital transformation and green energy wave.

However, in the current period, Nguyen Minh Hoang, Director of Analysis, Nhat Viet Securities Company, said that investors need to closely monitor the upcoming Vietnam-US tax negotiations so that investors can make a firm decision and avoid risks from financial leverage.

Vietnam remains steadfast in its goal of 8% GDP growth in 2025 as well as maintaining a sustainable double-digit growth rate in the following years through strengthening domestic growth forces including: Boosting public investment, promoting consumer demand, etc., the Vietnamese stock market is still a bright spot for long-term investment, thanks to a stable macro economy and business support policies.

In the next 90 days, when the trade picture gradually becomes clearer, investors need to keep a steady mindset, ready to welcome the wave of digital transformation and green energy to seize good investment opportunities.
