TNG stressed that security units in the central Tunisian province of Sidi Bouzid have dismantled a criminal network illegally transporting African migrants. These people were to be transferred to the southeastern Tunisian province of Sfax and then illegally immigrated to Italy.
The crackdown comes as the coast of Sfax becomes a transit point for illegal migrants seeking to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa.
Located just 80km off the coast of Tunisia, Lampedusa island is often the first stop for illegal migrants before they reach Italy.
This is one of the reasons for the sudden surge of migrants in Europe. A few weeks ago, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) said that the number of irregular border crossings at the European Union's (EU) external borders reached 331,600 in the first 10 months of 2023, the highest level since 2015.
