The Thousand Years of Love by author Nguyen Quang Lap was staged by Idecaf Drama Theater in 2009 and by Vietnam Drama Theater in 2010. This time, director Vu Hung ordered playwright Pham Van Dang to adapt it for stage in a reformed version.

Tu Suong makes viewers tear up with her tragic love story

A Thousand Years of Love goes deep into another corner of the famous general Ly Thuong Kiet, not in his glorious and resounding achievements but in his heart and love story.

Those are the pure emotions of the young man Ngo Tuan (Ly Thuong Kiet) who is passionately in love with the beautiful village girl Thuan Khanh.

Then an incident happened, she was captured and taken to the palace. Ngo Tuan was in pain and made a shocking decision, turning himself into a eunuch in hopes of having a chance to meet his lover.

Ironically, life pushed them apart for decades to come.

The ill-fated love story is set in the chaotic context of the Ly Dynasty. It is not a hot event but makes viewers feel sad about the hero's loneliness.

A Thousand Years of Love History shines a light on Ly Thuong Kiet's moments of weakness and pain because of love, very real and truthful.

From this key point, the play had moments that made the audience feel sorry. That was when Thuan Khanh was buried in her youth in the forbidden palace, waiting forever for Ngo Tuan, then was humiliated when he was no longer intact.

Ly Thuong Kiet walked tirelessly on the rotating stage at the end of his life, lonely, a shadow lost in old memories.

Thuan Khanh quietly wears a brown robe, willing to stand behind and watch the hero on the battlefield.

That beautiful but ultimately painful love story was portrayed by the co-stars Tu Suong - Le Trung Thao, making viewers tear up at times...

Behind the life of a famous general

There are some research documents stating that Ly Thuong Kiet had a wife and there was a temple dedicated to her. Some documents also emphasize that her name was Thuan Khanh.

In 2009, director Hoang Quynh Mai of the Vietnam Cai Luong Theater also had a Cai Luong production, the play "Trôn đời trung hieu voi Thang Long" (author: Pham Van Quy), which mentioned the love story of Ly Thuong Kiet and Thuan Khanh (using the correct name in the document), won the gold medal at the National Professional Cai Luong Theater Festival.

It can be seen that besides the image of a talented military general, Ly Thuong Kiet's life has many things that future generations want to learn and explain. In any aspect, whether as a national monument or a person like many others, Ly Thuong Kiet still shines with the personality of a general who devoted his whole life to the country.

To weave this beautiful and sad "love story", young director Vu Hung did not hesitate to invest in creating scenes that are both beautiful in form and try to touch emotions.

There are still some areas where the handling is a bit immature, so the play's rhythm cannot be fully mastered. However, Vu Hung has more or less shown his heart for the play about national history.
