My friend from Vietnam sent me sad news about musician Lu Nhat Vu. He passed away on March 29, at his home, at the age of 90. The passing of musician Lu Nhat Vu left many regrets for artists at home and abroad.
Thinking of musician Lu Nhat Vu and poet Le Giang, I cannot forget the folk song Ho Cay , collected in Tan Binh - Di An (Binh Duong), and we children spent years wandering with our grandparents on the roads looking for the fresh, fresh water of Vietnamese folk songs.
“Ho ho ho ho oh. The full moon, the sixteenth moon, the hanging moon oh oh. I’m here but I don’t have a wife, ho ho oh oh wait oh, I’m here but I don’t have a wife, oh oh, I met you but I don’t have a husband, ho ho ho oh oh.
Ho ho ho ho ho. Wine lies in the teacup waiting for spring rolls, ho ho. I lie in the empty room, ho ho o o o don't wait, waiting for you for a long time, ho ho ho ho...".
The Ho Cay song is a very subtle confession of love from a boy to a girl, very lovely and simple like the soul of the Vietnamese countryside people. It is one of thousands of songs and chants left by the couple Lu Nhat Vu and Le Giang for Vietnamese literature.

Anyone who has ever known them will feel the warmth, simplicity, sincerity and rare kindness of these two couples. In my heart, they are talented people, who love literature, art, and the country sincerely, and more than that, they are both great friends and our parents. Throughout the years I lived in Vietnam and until now, the images of musician Lu Nhat Vu and Le Giang still live forever in the hearts of many literary friends.
Nearly half a century has passed, musician Lu Nhat Vu and poet Le Giang have wandered all over the homeland, their footsteps have left callous marks of works of collecting, compiling, sketching, composing, researching folk songs and turning them into Southern folk songs. They are rare talents, sacrificing their whole lives for the passion of wandering, sifting through the sand to find gold, sifting through the lost and forgotten heritage of the Vietnamese folk literature treasure. They have left valuable musical research works such as: Ho trong dan ca Viet Nam , Hat luo Viet Nam , 300 melodies of the South , 250 melodies of the homeland , more than 200 folk songs written about life, homeland, country, Vietnamese people and dozens of books of memoirs, stories, music, research...
I still remember clearly, in the 1980s to 1990s, songs with folk melodies and melodies were composed such as: Kien Giang Minh Dep Lam ( Ly cheo dua ca ong ), Vo Chong Lam Lay ( Ly cay khe, Ly keo do ), Ra gieng anh cuoi em ( Ho cong chua ), Tam tinh co tho de t ( Ly ba xa keo chi ), Hanh trinh ly ngua o ( Ly ngua o Giong Rieng )... were broadcast on many radio and television stations and were very popular throughout the country. That was the most popular period of folk songs by musician Lu Nhat Vu.
The most unique feature of the couple Lu Nhat Vu and Le Giang is that they are inseparable, loving, caring for each other and sticking together like two birds with wings together for their entire lives, no matter the sun, rain, storms, or tempests that surround them. Now one wing has broken, the remaining bird is crying out in sorrow and grief.
Musician Lu Nhat Vu is one of the prominent names in Southern folk music, with compositions imbued with the soul of the countryside and imbued with human love. He is not only a music creator, but also a person who preserves the cultural values and identity of the Southern people through each verse and musical note. Lu Nhat Vu's songs are always simple and rustic but full of emotional weight, reflecting the life of honest, gentle and sincere farmers.
With sweet, easy-to-understand melodies, Lu Nhat Vu has brought to Vietnamese music a profound treasure of Southern folk songs. His works always have a perfect combination of folk melodies and national inspiration, creating a musical space imbued with the homeland, where everything is associated with the land, rivers and people.
Like the simple rice plant, he is gentle, quiet, honest, quietly dedicating his life to music. Nearly 200 works by musician Lu Nhat Vu were collected into the massive book Songs of the Southern Land , over 900 large pages, released in September 2013.
His passing is not only a great loss to his family, but also a regret for those who loved and appreciated his talent, and his music will live forever, as an indispensable part of the nation's musical memory.
Farewell to my great friend and father who gave us unforgettable years filled with love.
The musician lived a quiet life
In the heart of man, the song remains intact.
