Revitalize

Mr. Le Van Xang (63 years old) in Thu Bon Tay village, Duy Tan commune, Duy Xuyen said that since the age of 18, he has been attached to the profession of singing Bai Choi. Having gone through many ups and downs, until now, whenever he has the opportunity to perform or participate in Bai Choi classes, he never misses it.

Mr. Xang said: “I have been passionate about Bai Choi since I was a child, so I registered to join the Bai Choi Club in the commune to sing and teach the young generation. Recently, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism opened a training class to practice the art of Bai Choi, and I actively participated.”

Mr. Xang added that in 2019, the communal Bai Choi Club was established with 10 members. In addition to regular activities, it also participated in performances at the Ba Thu Bon festival, a spring festival that attracted public attention.

Mr. Dang Van Minh - Deputy Head of the Department of Culture and Sports of Duy Xuyen district said that the district has 5 Bai Choi clubs with about 50 members in the communes of Duy Tan, Duy Hoa, Duy Son, Duy Vinh, Duy Thanh. Duy Xuyen district supports more than 300 million VND to buy costumes and training equipment for the clubs.

Duy Xuyen strives to maintain regular club activities; organize performances, create a playground for everyone to develop their talents and seek new factors to develop the movement at the grassroots level.

“The locality has many ways to preserve and promote the value of the art of Bai Choi. For example, the Bai Choi Club of Duy Hoa commune cooperates with musicians of Duy Tan commune to organize singing and serving local people, expanding performances to Dai Loc, Dien Ban, Nong Son and Da Nang city.

The district's cultural sector also coordinates to introduce the art of Bai Choi into teaching in schools, organizes competitions, performances, and training for Bai Choi teams, groups, and clubs in communes and towns," said Mr. Minh.

Passing on the "fire" to the next generation

Quang Nam currently has 90 Bai Choi clubs, teams, and groups with more than 700 participants, of which more than 250 are practicing the call-to-thai. The number of teaching artists is about 60, of which 2 artists have been awarded the title of Meritorious Artist by the State.

Bai Choi clubs, teams, and groups in communes, wards, and towns organize regular activities, participate in competitions at all levels, and art performances to celebrate spring, contributing to spreading the art of Bai Choi in the community.

Ms. Vo Thi Thanh Van - Deputy Head of the Department of Cultural Management, Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that from 2021 to now, the unit has presided over and coordinated with the People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to organize 15 training courses on teaching and fostering practical skills of the Bai Choi art heritage with about 700 participants. In addition, the units organize the teaching of Bai Choi in schools through integration into the music curriculum.

In October alone, the unit coordinated with Duy Xuyen and Thang Binh districts to organize a training course on "Teaching and fostering practical skills of the heritage art of Bai Choi" for hundreds of students who are musicians, members of clubs, groups and vocal teachers of schools...

Ms. Van shared that if Hoi An City turns this art into a unique tourism product to attract tourists, then in Tam Ky City, the art of Bai Choi is identified as one of the contents included in the performance program during holidays and Tet, serving tourists.

Every year, the City's Center for Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinates with relevant units to organize training courses to foster practical skills in the art of Bai Choi for clubs, teams and groups in communes and wards and to ignite the Bai Choi passion among students.

In districts and towns such as Dai Loc, Dien Ban, Thang Binh, Phu Ninh, Nui Thanh, Tien Phuoc, Que Son, Hiep Duc, Nong Son, local authorities have issued plans to preserve and promote intangible cultural heritage of humanity, paying more attention to Bai Choi singers - those considered "living heritage".

“To nurture the movement, the cultural sector regularly organizes training courses to teach practical skills in the art heritage of Bài Chòi. Competitions, mass art performances, festivals, and Bài Chòi exchanges are also organized more frequently.

Focus on building a team of quality artisans and training the next generation to succeed them. In the coming years, the mutual influence between the team of composers of lyrics and scripts for Bài Chòi folk songs and the Bài Chòi artisans will still play an important role in keeping the Bài Chòi art alive in Quảng Nam" - Ms. Vân shared more.
