On February 25, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Director of the Soc Trang Province Drug Rehabilitation Center, informed that a total of 191 students of the facility had escaped.
As of this morning (February 25), authorities have tracked down about 70-80 fugitives scattered across the districts, of which 4 cases were voluntarily handed over to the authorities by their families.
According to Mr. Binh, the facility has 419 students, mostly male. At the time the students escaped, the facility had about 20 guards and staff.
Previously, a social media account named D.T. posted a 1-minute clip recording a group of people believed to be students of the aforementioned rehabilitation facility on the run. According to the clip, at around 8:10 p.m. on February 24, the group stopped by a house on the side of the road.
"The kids stopped by to ask for water, saying they didn't do anything, they just asked for water," the owner of the clip shared.
As reported, at around 11am on February 24, at the Soc Trang Province Drug Rehabilitation Center, a conflict broke out between several students, leading to a fight.
The authorities then invited the students who were fighting to come in for questioning, but they did not comply.
At around 5pm that same day, many students gathered and poured out the gate of the rehabilitation facility. Afterwards, this group of people overpowered the rehabilitation facility’s security force to rush out and escape.
Also at this facility, on August 30, 2023, Soc Trang City Police caught Dang Ngoc Son (a student undergoing drug rehabilitation at the Soc Trang province drug rehabilitation facility) illegally storing drugs, seizing over 9 grams of crystal meth.
Through investigation, this person confessed that he had organized drug use with other students in the same room many times.
