Hanoi Medical University has a new Chairman of the University Council

On the morning of April 3, at Hanoi Medical University, the Ministry of Health announced the decision to recognize Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thu Huong - former Director of the Department of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control (Ministry of Health) - as Chairwoman of the University Council, Hanoi Medical University.

Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thu Huong graduated from Hanoi Medical University (1995), got a master's degree from Libre de Bruxelles University, Belgium (2004) and a doctorate from the University of Public Health (2013). She received advanced training in political theory and advanced training in public administration at Harvard University and Indiana University (USA). She participated in compiling many books and documents for training in her professional field.

Ms. Phan Thi Thu Huong was recognized as Associate Professor in 2017. Since 2024, she has been a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (USA). She has taught and guided many PhD and Master students and has had many research works published in domestic and international journals.

Associate Professor Phan Thi Thu Huong has just officially become the new President of the University Council, Hanoi Medical University.

With the efforts of Associate Professor Huong and her colleagues, the Department of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control has implemented many effective programs, contributing to making Vietnam the 4th country in the world in terms of HIV/AIDS treatment quality and leading the Asia-Pacific region in pre-exposure prophylaxis.

With more than 30 years of experience in the medical field, Associate Professor Huong has made many important contributions to enhancing Vietnam's position in HIV/AIDS prevention and control in the international arena.

She is a member of the World Health Organization PrEP Treatment Guidelines development team. She has participated in many international studies and collaboration programs with leading US universities such as Harvard University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, New York University, University of Massachusetts Amherst, University of Chicago, University of Washington, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Francisco, etc.

Since 2018, she was introduced and nominated by Prof. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, Nobel Prize winner in Medicine 2008 and discoverer of the HIV virus, as Coordinator of ARNS Mers (French National Research Institute for HIV/Hepatitis and Emerging Diseases).

With extensive and strong international relationships, over the years, she has successfully connected and called for funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and control from international organizations such as UNAIDS, WHO, WB, ADB, GF, DFID, JICA, PEPFAR, CDC, USAID, FHI, PATH, AHF...

She was awarded the Second and Third Class Labor Medals, Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health,...

Associate Professor, Dr. Phan Thi Thu Huong takes on the position of Chairwoman of the School Council, University of Medicine, replacing Professor, Dr. Ta Thanh Van.

"As the Chairman of the School Board, I do not promise to do everything perfectly, but I promise to listen the way my teachers taught me to examine patients, not just with a stethoscope but with my heart," Ms. Huong shared.

On this occasion, Hanoi Medical University signed cooperation agreements with a number of functional departments of the Ministry of Health and practice hospitals such as Viet Duc Hospital, Hospital 108...
