China creates world's fastest semiconductor in unusual way

A research team led by Professor Peng Hailin and Qiu Chenguang of Peking University has successfully developed a two-dimensional (2D) GAAFET transistor, which is considered the world's first low-power transistor. Their research results were published in the journal Nature , with many team members calling it a "huge breakthrough."

China is trying to escape the effects of US sanctions.

According to the announcement, the team fabricated a wafer-scale, multi-layered, single-crystal GAA 2D configuration. “This is the fastest and most efficient transistor ever,” said Professor Peng. He also compared developing transistors based on 2D materials to “switching lanes,” while improvements based on existing materials are just “shortcuts.”

The team’s GAAFET transistors have been tested against products from major companies such as Intel, TSMC, and Samsung, with results showing superior performance under similar operating conditions. GAAFETs, or Gate-all-around field-effect transistors, are the next evolutionary step in transistor technology, following MOSFETs and FINFETs. This innovation comes primarily from the ability to better control the source and gate interfaces.

Weapons help China create special semiconductors

The highlight of Peking University’s research is the use of bismuth oxyselenide (Bi₂O₂Se) – a 2D semiconductor material that is more flexible and stronger than silicon at small scales. The shift from silicon to bismuth not only has potential for the semiconductor industry but also makes China more competitive in the field, especially in the context of the ongoing US-China trade war.

China sets up $47.5 billion fund to boost semiconductor industry

China is investing heavily in technological research to overcome its current limitations, not just to catch up but to lead the semiconductor industry. While 2D GAAFET transistors may not be the only future of semiconductor manufacturing, the research demonstrates the innovation and potential of China’s young generation to drive the technology industry forward. As the US continues to impose trade restrictions, China’s technology industry is racing against time to assert its position.
