According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reports of respiratory illness have now reached "high" or "very high" levels in many states or major cities in the US, as Covid-19 and flu trends increase in many parts of the country. The new Covid-19 variant that is rapidly evolving is JN.1.

Notably, this variant has raised concerns among health experts due to its increased risk of severe pneumonia.

How dangerous is the new JN.1 variant that causes Covid-19?

JN.1 variant raises concerns about pneumonia risk

The JN.1 variant appears to put more stress on lung tissue, potentially leading to more severe cases of pneumonia than previous variants, according to the Times Of India.

Researchers are actively investigating the cause of pneumonia caused by the JN.1 variant. Initial findings suggest that certain changes in the virus' spike protein and other key components may facilitate more effective entry into lung cells, leading to a heightened inflammatory response.

Monitoring symptoms like persistent cough, shortness of breath and fever is important, as timely intervention can help prevent progression to severe pneumonia, according to the Times Of India.

Symptoms of the JN.1 variant

New survey data from health authorities in the UK, where flu and Covid-19 are on the rise, shows the following are common symptoms of JN.1 infection among residents surveyed:

Runny nose was the most common symptom, accounting for 31.1%. Next was cough, accounting for 22.9%.

Other symptoms included: Headache (20.1%), fatigue (19.6%), muscle pain (15.8%), sore throat (13.2%).

In particular, two unusual symptoms were difficulty sleeping (10.8%) and anxiety (10.5%), according to CBS News .
