New Zealand Government Scholarships for Secondary School 2024 awarded to 14 outstanding students

Scholarship recipients will begin their studies at quality New Zealand secondary schools in July 2024 or January 2025.

Today, June 10, Education New Zealand (ENZ) held a scholarship award ceremony and pre-departure information sharing. The ceremony was to honor outstanding Vietnamese students who received the 2024 New Zealand Schools Scholarships (NZSS), as well as share practical information to prepare for their upcoming study abroad journey.

The NZSS Scholarship is designed specifically for Vietnamese students from Years 8 to 10, starting from 2019. With a unique video application format, the NZSS Scholarship encourages students to demonstrate their creativity and potential. This year, the program continues to receive many quality applications from students across the country.

After a rigorous selection process, Education New Zealand has selected 14 outstanding individuals to receive scholarships. They will begin their studies at quality New Zealand secondary schools in July 2024 or January 2025.

The highlight of this year’s scholarship programme is the dual scholarship scheme, which offers applicants multiple opportunities to pursue their study goals in New Zealand. Accordingly, students who do not receive the NZSS scholarship will continue to be considered for scholarships offered by New Zealand universities. This ensures that students can maximize their scholarship opportunities when applying for the NZSS scholarship. Four students have received valuable scholarships from universities under this new scheme.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Scott James, Consul General and Trade Counselor of New Zealand in Vietnam, said that the New Zealand Government Scholarship for Secondary Education is an important educational initiative, contributing to strengthening the development cooperation relationship on the basis of mutual respect and understanding between Vietnam and New Zealand.

“I hope that the scholarship recipients will make the most of this opportunity to learn, experience and develop themselves in New Zealand, while making a positive contribution to their classrooms and local communities. I believe that with New Zealand’s education system that encourages critical thinking through practice, their time studying in our country will help them develop their creativity, curiosity, apply knowledge in a variety of ways and develop their ability to adapt to a changing world,” said Mr. Scott James.

As one of the 14 students receiving the scholarship this time, Nguyen Nguyet Linh Sa said she was very proud and happy because her efforts had paid off. According to Linh Sa, this was the first time she had received a scholarship from a country famous for its quality education like New Zealand. "I am a bit nervous but also very excited to wait for the day I set foot there to experience and learn new things, meet international friends and explore the unique beauty of this beautiful country," Linh Sa said.

At the ceremony, the new NZSS 2024 scholarship recipients and their families also listened to the sharing from representatives of the Vietnamese Students Association in New Zealand, students who received the NZSS 2019 and 2023 scholarships, and parents whose children are studying in New Zealand, thereby having the best preparation for the upcoming study abroad journey.

Although she has only been in New Zealand for a year, Nguyen Thuy Truc (the recipient of the NZSS 2023 scholarship, currently studying at Awatapu College) said that she has had many positive changes and has become more mature. Truc's experience is to always ask questions to get timely answers, helping to solve problems more effectively, saving time to quickly get used to the new environment or learning method. "New Zealanders always welcome questions and are willing to help," Truc said.

This is also shared by Nguyen Thao Nguyen (recipient of the 2023 NZSS scholarship, currently studying at Pakuranga College). According to Nguyen, exchanging and sharing culture with classmates and local families (homestay) will help international students show goodwill and integrate better into the school and community.

Nguyen Tuan Minh (recipient of the 2020 NZSS scholarship, currently a third-year student at the University of Auckland) gave advice on skipping classes and subjects that are suitable for one's abilities to shorten study time and quickly develop personally in a new environment as well as finding university scholarship opportunities in New Zealand.

As a parent whose child received a scholarship this year, Mr. Tran Thanh Dung said he feel more secure after listening to the sharing about life and learning environment in New Zealand from parents and students who have received NZSS scholarships. “I believe studying abroad in New Zealand will be an important turning point in my child’s journey to adulthood,” said Mr. Dung./.
