This year, the New Zealand Secondary School Scholarship (NZSS) is offering 45 scholarships exclusively to Vietnamese students. This is the highest number since the scholarship was launched in 2019.
The special feature of NZSS 2025 is the dual admission mechanism and flexible English requirements, which help increase the chances of admission for candidates.
Specifically, candidates can register for two school preferences and be considered for Government scholarships based on both options. If they do not meet the NZSS, candidates still have the opportunity to be considered for scholarships separately by schools.
In addition to IELTS, the program accepts equivalent international English certificates such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge B1 Preliminary, and even organizes interviews or proficiency tests if necessary.
NZSS is initiated by Education New Zealand (ENZ), this year with the participation of 45 quality secondary schools across New Zealand. Students can choose schools based on geography, size, educational philosophy or curriculum such as NCEA, Cambridge, or International Baccalaureate (IB).
In particular, "single-sex" schools (boys' and girls' schools) in New Zealand provide a unique learning environment, helping students develop confidence and comprehensively. Students in grades 8, 9, and 10 in Vietnam, with an average score of 8.0 and English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.0, can apply.

Sharing about the program, Mr. Ben Burrowes, ENZ's Asia Regional Director, said that increasing the number of NZSS 2025 scholarships not only affirms the strong commitment from New Zealand schools, but also opens up many opportunities for Vietnamese students on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Hoang Thuy Truc - a former student of Le Quy Don High School, Ho Chi Minh City, who received the NZSS 2023 scholarship - expressed that participating in the scholarship helped her mature and realize her own worth. At the same time, she also felt that New Zealand is a safe and ideal environment for comprehensive development.
The NZSS scholarship program is currently only available to Vietnamese students. This year's scholarship winners will begin their studies at New Zealand secondary schools in July 2025.
Education New Zealand is the New Zealand Government agency responsible for promoting international education. ENZ's activities aim to promote New Zealand's quality education, and support New Zealand schools and education providers to promote New Zealand's education products.
