On the evening of September 27, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the uprising to liberate Cam Thanh commune, Hoi An city (1964 - 2024), the leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism awarded a certificate of National Intangible Cultural Heritage to the craft of making bamboo and coconut houses in Cam Thanh.
Previously, on February 21, 2024, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 380 to include the craft of making bamboo and coconut houses in Cam Thanh in the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
On this occasion, the leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also awarded a certificate of recognition for meeting the criteria of traditional occupations according to the provisions of Decision No. 43 dated December 30, 2022 of the Provincial People's Committee for Cam Thanh bamboo and coconut craft.
Up to now, in Hoi An city, there are 6 occupations included in the list of national intangible cultural heritages, including: Thanh Chau bird's nest exploitation; Thanh Ha pottery; Kim Bong carpentry; Tra Que vegetable growing; bamboo and coconut house making in Cam Thanh; and traditional handicraft of weaving hammocks from parasol trees in Cu Lao Cham.
Based on available materials, local residents here have created knowledge related to processing and assembling bamboo and coconut houses suitable for living conditions and environment.
The way of making bamboo and coconut houses in Cam Thanh has its own characteristics of Hoi An land that not every place has. From the design to the technique of processing raw materials, processing and assembling, all demonstrate the creativity, diligence and eagerness to learn of the craftsmen.
The craft of making bamboo and coconut houses in Cam Thanh has formed a massive system of folk knowledge in the process of exploitation, manufacturing, assembly and consumption.
