According to research by the Vietnam Association of Colorectal Surgery, the rate of hemorrhoids in Vietnam is 35 - 50% of rectal diseases. Of which, the rate of women with hemorrhoids is higher than men (accounting for 61%).
If in the past, people with hemorrhoids were usually over 40 years old, recently, the number of young patients is quite large, even at school age.
Dr. Nguyen Phuc Minh - Head of the Department of Digestive Surgery, Binh Dan Hospital (HCMC) - said that hemorrhoids are a condition in which the veins in the anus and lower rectum are dilated, forming hemorrhoids inside the anus. Unreasonable living and working conditions will cause hemorrhoids to grow larger and cause complications.
Specifically, when hemorrhoids swell, they will cause uncomfortable symptoms for the patient such as: bleeding due to ruptured blood vessels in the anal area, causing pain, infection, prolapse and having to be pushed back in by hand... affecting the patient's daily life.
Usually the patient can endure it, but in some acute cases, bleeding requires emergency care.
Doctor Minh said that hemorrhoids now appear in all ages, especially office workers, even at the hospital many young people of school age 15-16 years old have come to see a doctor due to hemorrhoids.
When asked, almost all young people have risk factors that promote the development of hemorrhoids such as: sitting for long periods, lack of exercise...
Common causes of hemorrhoids are often due to sitting too much, lack of exercise, obesity, daily meals low in green vegetables and fiber leading to constipation, regularly eating spicy foods, drinking a lot of beer and alcohol...
“Constipation is a favorable condition that promotes hemorrhoids to become more severe. Or accompanying diseases cause hemorrhoids to appear as tumors in the anorectal area,” said Dr. Minh.
Dr. Minh said that when you notice symptoms of hemorrhoids, you should go to the hospital for examination. For mild cases, the doctor will instruct you to adjust your diet or take medicine at home. If the hemorrhoids are severe, you will need surgery or a procedure to remove the hemorrhoids.
There are many surgical methods available, and doctors will evaluate the appropriate method depending on the severity.
Doctors recommend that if there are abnormalities in the anal area such as itching, burning pain or painful bowel movements, you should see a doctor immediately. Mild cases can be treated by changing your lifestyle, taking medication, etc.
You should eat foods rich in fiber such as vegetables, regularly soak your anus in warm water for 10-15 minutes each time, avoid strenuous exercise, sitting or standing for long periods of time, drink enough 2 liters of water per day, limit spicy foods, alcohol, beer...
Besides, practice the habit of not sitting for too long, after 30 minutes walk a little, exercise at least 30 minutes every day, do not let constipation last long...
How to treat hemorrhoids in pregnant women?
According to Dr. Minh, for women of childbearing age, as the pregnancy gets bigger, it will impede blood flow, causing hemorrhoids to stagnate and swell, causing uncomfortable symptoms.
Therefore, when having hemorrhoids during pregnancy, the main treatment is to be conservative, not to intervene, but to adjust daily activities, avoid constipation, and wait until after giving birth to assess whether hemorrhoids need intervention or not.
Acute cases depend on complications to be treated during pregnancy.
