Vietnam vs Philippines match at risk of not being broadcast on television

According to regulations, the host country of each match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Asia will be the sole television copyright holder, independent of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) or the International Football Federation (FIFA).

Therefore, the sale of copyright in each country has its own different factors. For the upcoming match, the Philippine Football Federation assigned the copyright sale to a media unit. Television stations in Vietnam that want to buy the copyright to broadcast the match must negotiate through this unit.

VTC News sources said that the negotiation process for television copyright between a Vietnamese station and the Philippine host has just started today, November 14. However, the asking price is very high, making it impossible for the two units to reach a common agreement.

Vietnam does not have the copyright to broadcast the match in the Philippines.

In fact, it is not that Vietnamese TV stations are slow or unwilling to negotiate to buy television copyrights to serve fans. In the past several months, the unit assigned to sell television copyrights in the Philippines has not made any offers or negotiations with partners.

For the home matches of the Vietnamese team, the VFF signed an agreement early this year with FPT Play. This unit will broadcast live all 3 matches of Coach Troussier and his team at home against Iraq (November 21, 2023), Indonesia (March 26, 2024) and the Philippines (June 6, 2024).

The Vietnam team has called up 80 players for 4 training sessions to establish the playing style that coach Philippe Troussier desires. The French coach emphasized that the Vietnam team has many players who have achieved glory such as winning the AFF Cup, winning the SEA Games, winning the U23 Asian Cup runner-up position, and reaching the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup. All of them have had good achievements in the past, but overcoming that threshold is not easy.

Coach Troussier's goal is to qualify for the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup. The Vietnamese team did not have really impressive results in the friendly matches, which is the reason why the 68-year-old strategist is under a lot of pressure from the media and fans. Mr. Troussier is very eager to win the official matches of the Vietnamese team.
