Ho Chi Minh City conducts primary school admissions based on "actual residence" criteria

Speaking with Government Information, Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City , affirmed that the current admission criteria based on the place of residence is to create favorable conditions for parents and students. The City is currently implementing and considering many options and has not encountered many difficulties or problems.

In the 2024-2025 school year, Ho Chi Minh City will conduct primary school enrollment using the same online system that has been announced. Accordingly, parents will use the student's identification code and date of birth to log in and fill in the necessary information on the system.

The new feature this year is that the information about the student's residence on the system will only display "current residence", helping the locality to grasp the real address and distribute the place to study. This way, students can study at schools near their homes, with better travel conditions. In addition, operating on the same system also helps ensure the smooth flow of student information data in the following admissions.

This year, Ho Chi Minh City has 2 admission rounds for students entering grades 1 and 6, in which the first round prioritizes students residing in the area. The second round is based on information that units have not recruited enough students compared to the target, the primary admission steering committee decides to open the admission portal and must follow the prescribed time frame.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thai Vinh Nguyen, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Thu Duc City , there are currently not many difficulties in implementing primary school enrollment based on current residence because the data review work has been carried out by Thu Duc since March, and student information in the area is almost complete.

For those who have not yet updated full student information, the Department of Education and Training will move on to the second round of enrollment.

"Everything is ready, now we just need to wait for the first round of zoning for grades 1 and 6 to be able to enroll," said Mr. Nguyen.

Regarding the issue of enrollment based on actual residence, whether there will be negative consequences, for example, parents "running" for a place to live so that their children can get into school, Mr. Nguyen said that it is entirely up to the local authorities. If the local authorities tighten this step, there will be no negative consequences. The Thu Duc City Admissions Steering Committee has also directed the wards to verify the correct residential addresses of students.

Mr. Trinh Vinh Thanh, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Go Vap District, said that allocating study places to students based on their current residence is appropriate, regardless of whether they are temporary or permanent residents. The Admissions Board of Go Vap District will consider the specific needs and quotas of each school to ensure study places for students.

As a suburban area with a large labor force, District 12 is also implementing primary school enrollment in the general spirit of the City.

According to Mr. Khuu Manh Hung, Head of the Department of Education and Training of District 12 , the locality is currently dividing the first round of enrollment, in which the number of 6th grade students has increased by 302 students compared to the initial number.

The district will try to arrange school places for all these additional students. As for admission to grade 1, there will be no complicated problems.
