The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has just issued a document providing professional guidance for primary schools for the 2024-2025 school year.
One of the main requirements is to streamline competitions for teachers and students, while promoting the implementation of the open classroom model.
According to the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Training, the department only organizes a number of competitions related to teaching and learning activities of general education programs in the direction of enhancing creative experiential activities.
These competitions are suitable for the requirements of developing the capacity and qualities of teachers and students. The organization of the competition ensures savings and efficiency. Teachers and students can participate voluntarily and free of charge...
However, according to many teachers in Ho Chi Minh City, competitions for teachers and students today are not only organized by the education sector.
"There are many competitions organized by different departments, sectors, and units (outside the education sector), but they keep pressing them down and requiring schools to participate. There are too many and overlapping competitions; putting pressure on both teachers and students. The most miserable are us teachers," said a fourth-grade teacher in inner-city Ho Chi Minh City.
The teacher above proposed: "We hope there will be a regulation: schools are allowed to refuse mass competitions, to focus on teaching and learning."
Change your attitude when observing class
The document of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City requires primary school principals to change their attitude in school management in general and in class observation in particular. The change in the gentle and friendly style of the school principals will help teachers be more confident in changing teaching methods.
It is known that many primary schools in Ho Chi Minh City have implemented innovation in school management. In particular, observing and visiting classes is a regular activity of the school board to provide timely advice, guidance, and professional training for teachers.
This work is especially important in the current period of curriculum and textbook innovation. However, in reality, some primary schools still follow the old way: observing lessons is to "pick out" teachers' shortcomings, to evaluate teachers' qualifications and skills, and to consider competition... Therefore, some teachers are worried and force students to prepare in advance to "perform" when there is an observed lesson.
