Russian President Vladimir Putin re-elected

According to Sputnik news agency, on March 18, preliminary vote counting results showed that Mr. Vladimir Putin won an overwhelming victory in the Russian presidential election with 87.34% of the votes, a record high in modern Russian history.

The Russian presidential election will last for three days, starting on March 15. In addition to incumbent President Vladimir Putin, other candidates are Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Lower House of Representatives Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the Committee for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic of the Lower House of Representatives Nikolay Kharitonov and Deputy Chairman of the Lower House of Representatives Vladislav Davankov. According to the Central Election Commission of Russia, Mr. Nikolay Kharitonov received 4.28% of the vote, Mr. Vladislav Davankov (4%) and Mr. Leonid Slutsky (3.16%).

With this result, Mr. Putin was elected for a 5th term and became the leader of Russia for the next 6 years. He was the president of Russia for the terms 2000 - 2004, 2004 - 2008, 2012 - 2018, 2018 - 2024 and held the position of prime minister for the period 2008 - 2012.

This is the first time Russia has held a presidential election over three days, instead of one day as before. Voter turnout this year was 74.22%, surpassing the record of 67.54% in 2018.

Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked all the people of the country who voted in the presidential election. He stressed that the source of the country's strength is the Russian people, the common will of the people of the whole country is formed from the voice of each person. President Putin also affirmed that there are conditions for Russia to become stronger. He said: "There are conditions to go further, to make Russia more solid, stronger, more effective."

President Putin said that the events that Russia is currently going through have directly affected the high voter turnout in the election.
