Today (December 2), Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. accused a Russian attack submarine of entering the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the West Philippine Sea, calling the move "extremely worrying."
The Armed Forces of the Philippines detected the Russian submarine UFA 490 while it was passing through the West Philippine Sea on November 28.
Philippine Navy spokesman Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad on December 2 confirmed information published by the Philippine Daily Inquirer about a Russian Kilo-class submarine appearing about 80 nautical miles off the western province of Occidental Mindoro on November 28.
The Philippine Armed Forces and Coast Guard said they tracked a Russian diesel-electric attack submarine off the coast of Occidental Mindoro province last week before it surfaced in the West Philippine Sea (the Philippines calls the eastern part of the South China Sea).
The Philippine Navy's guided missile frigate Jose Rizal made radio contact with the submarine, which was identified by the enemy as UFA 490 .
"The Russian submarine said it was waiting for improved weather conditions before departing for Vladivostok (Russia)," Reuter quoted a Trinidad spokesman, but did not mention the reason the ship was in the sea.
The Philippine Navy has sent a ship to escort the Russian submarine out of the waters to ensure maritime regulations are followed.
The Russian Embassy in Manila has not commented on the above information.
