Common ways to prevent cancer include: Limiting fat, added sugar, red meat, processed meat, refined grains, and saturated and trans fats; limiting alcohol, avoiding tobacco, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding the sun, and getting vaccinated. In particular, physical activity plays an important role in preventing cancer, but how should you exercise to reap the benefits?

The new study, led by scientists from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in collaboration with the University of Oxford (UK), analyzed data from more than 85,000 participants from the UK Biobank, to examine the association between light physical activity levels and the incidence of 13 types of cancer, including breast and colon cancer.
Participants, with an average age of 63, wore monitors that tracked total activity, activity intensity, and daily step count.
After a median follow-up of 5.8 years, 2,633 people developed one of 13 types of cancer.
Walking more every day really helps reduce cancer risk
The results found that people who were most active had a 26% lower risk of cancer than those who were least physically active.
Not only walking for exercise, but walking during daily activities also brings benefits.

Researchers have also explored the effects of replacing daily sedentary time with light and moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity and found that this change actually reduced cancer risk.
In particular, walking more every day really helps reduce the risk of cancer. Specifically, walking 7,000 steps a day reduces the risk of cancer by 11% compared to walking 5,000 steps; walking 9,000 steps a day, the reduction will increase to 16%, according to the medical news site News Medical.
However, above 9,000 steps, the benefits do not increase much.
Sedentary people can reduce their cancer risk by incorporating more walking, at any pace, into their daily routine, the researchers concluded.
The authors note that not only walking for exercise, but also walking during daily activities brings the above benefits.
