DNVN - On January 15, the social network TikTok, with 170 million users in the US, announced that it will completely stop operating in this country from January 19, if the ban approved by the US Congress officially takes effect.
When accessing TikTok, US users will be redirected to a website that provides information about the US government's ban, along with instructions for downloading personal data. However, TikTok's US offices will remain open, ensuring employees' rights to jobs, salaries and benefits while they wait for the decision before January 19.
TikTok's decision comes after a hearing at the US Supreme Court, where judges raised questions and showed a tendency to support keeping the ban in place.
Previously, on January 10, ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, filed an appeal to the US Supreme Court to oppose a law passed by the US Congress in April 2024. This law requires app stores such as the App Store and Play Store to remove TikTok from their platforms from January 19, citing the risk of spying and data manipulation from the application.
ByteDance, up to now, has remained steadfast in not selling TikTok's US operations and continues to prepare for various response scenarios.
TikTok’s shutdown in the US comes just a day before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, after Trump had previously expressed his opposition to banning the social media platform.
