The household of Mrs. Phan Thi Lien (My Thuy village, Hai An commune) suffered the most damage when all 6 snail ponds that were about to be harvested were flattened by the tide. According to Mrs. Lien, the high tide surpassed the dikes surrounding the ponds, then tore them apart and dragged all the snails in the ponds out to sea.
“A pond of snails was worth about 200 million VND when it was about to be sold. Now it’s all gone,” said Ms. Lien with tears in her eyes.
Mr. Phan Thanh Han (My Thuy village) also suffered heavy losses in this morning's tidal wave when a 200m2 pond for raising shrimp and crabs was broken and lost. In addition, Mr. Han's two ponds for raising snails also suffered losses of about 40 million VND.
"I lost about 100 million VND in seed money, not to mention the cost of building the pond," said Mr. Han.
Trying to reinforce the dike of the pond in the hope of salvaging some of the remaining snails, Mr. Phan Hue shared: “Living here for decades, this is the first time we have witnessed a high tide like this morning. From 5am to 9am this morning, the tide suddenly rose, flooding a large area of the pond. Many ponds were flooded nearly 1 meter deep,” Mr. Hue recounted.
Through investigation, nearly ten households in My Thuy village suffered damage in the tidal wave this morning. Among them, many households with ponds in high areas were not damaged, but the waves damaged the system of wells that bring salt water from the sea. For example, Mr. Phan Thanh Mien's household had 2 wells broken, causing damage of about 70 million VND.
Most of the snails that were damaged this morning were preparing for harvest. Many households mobilized their family members to collect the snails that were submerged in freshwater to sell to traders, but they did not get much price.
"Normally, snails of this size sell for an average price of 250,000 VND/kg, but now traders buy for less than half that price," said Mr. Han.
Present at the snail purchasing area, reporters recorded the scene of traders hiring people to classify the snails by size to bring to the markets for sale.
Speaking to reporters, Vice Chairman of Hai Lang District People's Committee Cap Xuan Ta said he had received a report on the incident from the locality. The district is currently compiling data on the damage situation in the area to have a specific report.
Mr. Cap Xuan Ta added that heavy rain occurred in Hai Lang area from yesterday, October 26 to the morning of October 27. In that situation, the district has directed the communes to respond to the storm and the flood after the storm. In particular, focusing on securing houses, pulling boats in Hai An and Hai Khe communes to shore for safe shelter. In communes in vulnerable areas, near rivers and streams, the authorities have come to mobilize people to move from low-lying areas to high-lying areas.
"Currently, some communes such as Hai Chanh and Hai Phong have basically moved people from vulnerable areas to safe places, but not in a concentrated manner," said Mr. Ta.
Previously, the People's Committee of Hai Lang district issued a telegram directing localities and units to deploy tasks to respond to storm No. 6 and floods. In particular, it emphasized the need to focus on implementing plans to ensure the safety of people's lives and property; to avoid unexpected and passive situations, especially at night.
