According to Thanh Nien reporters, on August 2, the eastern area of Hue Citadel (adjacent to Xuan 68 Street, Hue City) is being cleaned and leveled.
The eastern area of the Upper Citadel is being leveled, returning the site to the relic. This area was once occupied by households who built houses.
These days, workers are collecting garbage and clearing bushes; a series of abandoned houses previously built by locals as shelters have been demolished; the surface of the Upper Citadel has also been leveled. This is part of the project to clean up the Upper Citadel, invested in by the Hue City Land Fund Development Center.
The construction unit is clearing the remains of the remaining house in Thuong Thanh (section adjacent to Xuan 68 Street).
Unlike the "suffocating" scene when the relic's ramparts were encroached upon by hundreds of households more than 3 years ago. After the site clearance, standing from the Upper Citadel of Hue, people and tourists can enjoy the view of the massive architectural work, see the moats, and the roads running along the Hue Citadel.
According to the Hue City Land Fund Development Center, it is expected that by the end of 2023, the project to clean up and restore the Hue Upper Citadel will be completed. It will then be handed over to the Hue Monuments Conservation Center for management.

Bricks left by people building houses in the past are still on the wall.
The roads along the Upper City became clear.
The Thuong Thanh area adjacent to Ong Ich Khiem street has just been cleared of house debris.
Previously, in order to preserve and protect the historical values and cultural integrity of the Hue Citadel, in 2019, the People's Committee of Thua Thien-Hue province carried out a historic migration. In phase 1, the project relocated a total of 5,024 households to new residences. To date, 2,751 households have been approved for resettlement.
In the Thuong Thanh area alone, there are 289 cases of houses having to be relocated. Currently, most of the Thuong Thanh households have handed over the premises, with only one case remaining, expected to be handled by the end of August.
Before the relocation, there were many people living in the Upper City area.
Temporary houses were built on the Upper Citadel, causing the relic to be damaged and dirty.
The Upper Citadel, also known as the Citadel, has a circumference of nearly 10 km, is 6.6 m high, 21 m thick, and was built zigzag with forts arranged at regular intervals, accompanied by artillery guns, cannons, ammunition depots, etc. Initially, the citadel was only built of earth, and it was not until the end of King Gia Long's reign that bricks were started to be built. However, later, people encroached and built houses in that area.
The Upper Citadel is located in the Hue Citadel system, one of the relics belonging to the Hue Monuments Complex recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage.
