On the morning of January 6, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) announced the dismissal of coach Shin Tae-yong. The agency did not give a specific reason. However, according to Indonesian and Korean media, Mr. Shin lost his job most likely due to poor performance at the 2024 AFF Cup.
CNN Indonesia quoted chairman Erick Thohir: “ Of course we thank Mr. Shin for what he has done so far. My relationship is very good and we are working hard for the desired plans. Mr. Sumardji met with coach Shin Tae-yong this morning, received his letter. Of course, there will be a further process regarding our relationship and I thank him for everything .”

According to PSSI, although the Indonesian team uses a young squad, they are still capable of passing the group stage of the AFF Cup 2024. The team from the archipelago is in the same group with Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and the Philippines. Coach Shin and his team lost 2 matches against Vietnam and the Philippines, drew with Laos and won against Myanmar. With only 4 points, they were eliminated bitterly at home.
Coach Shin Tae-yong often complains and has many reasons for the Indonesian team's unsatisfactory matches. President Erick Thohir himself once spoke up to ask the Korean coach to stop complaining because participating in the AFF Cup means accepting difficulties.
