Government leaders proposed to continue building the North-South expressway to Dat Mui instead of to Ca Mau city as currently planned.
The request was made by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at a site survey of the Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway project, part of the Eastern North-South expressway project, on December 9.
Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway is 110 km long, with connecting routes of about 25 km, 17 m wide, 4 lanes, with a total investment of more than 27,200 billion VND. The project started construction at the beginning of the year and is considered the most important route in the Mekong Delta, connecting many provinces and cities with 128 bridges.
According to the report, the projects are currently about 15% completed, the site clearance work is basically completed, the whole route has about 80 households in 5 provinces. The source of foundation materials is also basically guaranteed.
"During this term, the expressway from North to South to Ca Mau must be opened and the expressway will continue to be deployed all the way to Ca Mau Cape, instead of Ca Mau City as currently planned (estimated to be about 70 km if following the shortest, most direct route)," said the Prime Minister.

Regarding this content, the Ministry of Transport is seeking opinions on the draft adjustment of the road network planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050. In particular, the North-South expressway in the East will be 2,153 km long, with 4 to 10 lanes, an increase of 90 km compared to the current planning. The route starts from Huu Nghi border gate (Lang Son) to Dat Mui (Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau), adding a 90 km long Ca Mau - Dat Mui section, 4 lanes, invested before 2030.
According to the planning unit, the traffic forecast for the Ca Mau - Dat Mui section by 2030 is about 18,300-20,100 converted cars per day and night, so it is necessary to form a 4-lane expressway to synchronize with the Can Tho - Ca Mau section.
In addition to the highway construction site, the Government leaders also surveyed Ca Mau airport. This airport dates back to the French era, is a level 3C airport, with a runway 1,500 m long and 30 m wide, and can accommodate aircraft such as ATR72, E190 and equivalent or lower. For many years, the airport has operated only one route from Ca Mau to Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa with a frequency of 5 flights per week.
Since April 29, the direct flight route from Ca Mau to Hanoi has been put into operation with a frequency of 3 flights per week. The flights are always crowded, but due to limited runways, the aircraft have had to reduce their capacity and frequency.
After the survey, the Prime Minister requested the locality to soon upgrade Ca Mau airport to ensure it can receive large aircraft, shortening the distance between the province and other localities.
"No later than the first quarter of 2024, the Ministry of Transport will complete adjustments and supplements to the planning; localities will complete site clearance; and Vietnam Airlines Corporation will take the lead in arranging capital for the project," he requested.

Previously, speaking at the conference to announce the planning and promote investment in Ca Mau province in the morning, the Government leader requested that localities that have announced the planning must organize and implement it well, must have close supervision and inspection, and at the same time make timely and effective adjustments, without waiting or relying on others.
The Head of Government also requested Ca Mau to continue improving the investment and business environment, while doing a good job of site clearance, creating clean land for investors, ensuring the harmony of interests of the State, investors and people.
At the conference, Secretary of the Ca Mau Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Tien Hai said that the province has a very special geographical position that no other locality has, being the southernmost point of the country, with favorable conditions for economic development and exchange with Southeast Asian countries. "The province is committed to doing its best to support and accompany businesses and investors in their business activities in the area," said Mr. Hai.
As a province in the Mekong Delta, Ca Mau is over 5,300 km2 wide, has 3 sides bordering the sea with a coastline of 254 km, a large fishing ground of about 80,000 km2, rich aquatic resources; aquaculture area of over 300,000 ha. The province has the largest shrimp output in the country, with an export turnover of over 1 billion USD per year, mainly exporting aquatic products.
Currently, Ca Mau has nearly 5,000 enterprises, with a total registered capital of nearly 62,000 billion VND and 446 operating investment projects, with a total registered capital of more than 144,612 billion VND (including 9 FDI projects, with a total registered investment capital of 153.4 million USD).
The total product in the province in 2023 is estimated to reach more than 45,400 billion VND, an increase of nearly 8%, exceeding the set plan; GRDP per capita is estimated to reach nearly 70 million VND (plan 67.5 million VND); total social investment capital is 24,000 billion VND...
