There are 4 goalkeepers currently on the national team, including Nguyen Filip, Dang Van Lam, Nguyen Van Viet and Tran Trung Kien. Of these, only Nguyen Filip has a clear advantage over the others.
Although Nguyen Van Viet has been called up to the national team frequently recently, the goalkeeper currently playing for SLNA Club has hardly been used. Meanwhile, Dang Van Lam has declined significantly compared to his peak. This Russian-born Vietnamese goalkeeper has made many mistakes recently, and he also lacks the quick reflexes he had before.
In that context, young goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien suddenly had a chance. First, this goalkeeper is making a good impression in the V-League. He kept a clean sheet for HAGL Club after the first 3 rounds, contributing greatly to helping Mr. Duc's team to the top of the tournament.
Second, Tran Trung Kien has a big advantage in age, he is only 21 years old, the future is wide open. That also means that if Tran Trung Kien can assert his position at the national team level, his value will be long-term.
Third, the goalkeeper currently playing for HAGL Club has a physical advantage. With a height of 1.91 m, Tran Trung Kien is taller than his colleague Nguyen Van Viet (1.81 m) and before that, goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu (1.80 m, currently playing for Hai Phong team, recently also often called up to the national team) by an inch.
Fitness is a very important factor for goalkeepers, because this is a position that often has one-on-one confrontations with the opponent's strikers, and often has to face high balls. Initially, goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien also showed that he has the ability to catch high balls quite well.
The only remaining question is whether coach Kim Sang-sik is willing to give goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien a chance in the two matches against India (October 9) and Lebanon (October 15). These are all friendly matches, so there is no better opportunity for coaches to test new and young players than in matches like this.
Coach Kim Sang-sik can apply a different formula for each of the two friendly matches mentioned above, using a different goalkeeper, as he did in the matches against Russia (goalkeeper Dang Van Lam) and Thailand (goalkeeper Nguyen Filip) in September. Especially, against India, which is not a very strong opponent, not a very tense match, the Korean coach might give a chance to newcomer Tran Trung Kien.
Or, maybe at some point in the two friendly matches mentioned above, Mr. Kim will put the HAGL team's goalkeeper on the field, to help this player get used to the atmosphere of international matches at the national team level.
There is no training session as good as international matches. There is no theory as useful as practice on the pitch. If goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien is used, even for a limited time in the upcoming matches, it will be a new step forward for this young goalkeeper.
