Hoang Mai Huong, born in 2002, is one of the four valedictorians graduating with a perfect score of 4.0/4.0 from the National Economics University this year. The female student majoring in Auditing said that the way she always maintains an “all-A” transcript at this leading economics school is thanks to always arranging her time scientifically.
According to the female student, her starting point was not outstanding, she was even somewhat self-conscious because she came from a "little-known" school in Ha Nam.
“My lack of confidence made me ignore the school's scholarship policies because I thought I would never get one,” Huong recalls.
So in the first semester, although she got A’s in all subjects, Huong missed out on the scholarship because she did not accumulate enough credits as required. Regretting and believing that “it turns out I can do it too”, Huong began to research information about the scholarship and set goals to achieve in the remaining semesters.

With her strength in self-study, Huong reads the textbook before class in most subjects. While reading, the female student also asks herself the question “Why is this problem like this?” If she cannot answer the question through studying the textbook, Huong will go online to find information to answer. If she still cannot explain, Huong will write it down to ask the teacher the next day.
“I always have the constant worry that if I don’t prepare my lesson in advance for class tomorrow morning, I will miss something when the teacher teaches. If I read in advance, it will be like the teacher is re-explaining what I have learned, so I will remember it for a long time,” Huong said.
In addition, in class, in all subjects, Huong chooses to sit at the first table. This helps her concentrate better because sitting close to the lecturer makes it difficult to be distracted. Normally, the teacher will lecture very quickly, Huong chooses to "take notes" on the computer, each subject will be a data file saved on Drive.
When reviewing, the female student synthesized, wrote down all the theory and did the exercises from chapter 1 in a new notebook. This, according to Huong, was time-consuming but very effective. Maintaining this way of studying helped Huong get scholarships in all the remaining semesters.

In addition to studying, Huong has also participated in scientific research since her third year, tutoring and doing online business on several online sales platforms. The female student has an article published in an international conference report as a co-author.
To effectively do many things at once, Mai Huong said she is always strict with herself. There is usually no delay between the things she does. The female student also has almost no time for entertainment, sitting in one place surfing Tiktok or using social networks.
“Like many young people, I am easily drawn into “movie review” channels. Before, I used to watch movies while eating, but gradually I realized that this was quite time-consuming.
To avoid those temptations, I think I need to be determined and always keep myself busy. The more work I have, the stricter I need to be with myself. In addition, every night before going to bed, I will outline in my mind what tasks I need to do tomorrow, and what is more important will be ranked in order of priority," Huong said.
Huong’s only way of entertainment now is… listening to music while studying. Huong has maintained this way of studying since high school. “Before, when my parents saw me studying like that, they often wondered, ‘How can I concentrate on studying when listening to music?’ But when I listen to music, I feel everything flows more smoothly and I’m less bored.”

Receiving the title of valedictorian of the National Economics University, Mai Huong felt surprised but also happy because her efforts and hard work were rewarded.
“For me, it was a dramatic change. This result partly came from the fact that I have always been strict and persistent with myself,” Huong said.
Accompanying Mai Huong in both studying and researching, Associate Professor Dr. Doan Thanh Nga was impressed by her student because of her diligence, discipline, and progress, always proactively seeking new knowledge and not afraid to ask questions to clarify problems.
“Huong is very smart in applying theory to practice. This result comes from Huong’s perseverance, effort and passion for learning. She always sets high goals for herself and constantly tries to overcome all challenges to achieve those goals. These are valuable qualities that not all students have,” said Associate Professor, Dr. Doan Thanh Nga.
Currently, Mai Huong is working at a top independent auditing firm. The student is also preparing to take an auditing certificate exam to support her work and plans to continue her master's degree in Vietnam.
