The 2024 WEF Dalian Conference took place from June 25-27 with the theme "New Growth Horizons" in Dalian City, China. The conference attracted 1,600 delegates and was organized with the spirit of being a place to converge and create new ideas, new fields, pioneering and innovative models that will shape future economic sectors.
Special speech
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Thanh Binh, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is expected to have a dense and continuous program of activities, both bilaterally and multilaterally. And for the first time, the Prime Minister will deliver a special speech at the Opening Plenary Session with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and other leaders of other countries. In addition, the Prime Minister will speak at discussion sessions at the conference, chair dialogues and seminars with the business community dedicated to Vietnam.
“The Prime Minister is one of the few heads of government invited by the WEF and the host country China to attend the conference for two consecutive years. This shows that the WEF and China highly value Vietnam’s position, role and contribution to global economic growth as well as Vietnam’s development vision for the economy in the future,” Mr. Binh said in an interview with the press before the visit.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at this conference, the Prime Minister will share Vietnam's assessments, comments and views on the world economy, prospects, opportunities, challenges, and "great changes" that are taking place in the world, affecting global economic development in the short and long term. The Prime Minister will also discuss and propose solutions to promote the potential and strengths of the Asia-Pacific region, including the role of major economies in the region such as China. In particular, we will demonstrate Vietnam's responsible contribution, emphasizing the role of the private sector and public-private partnership in promoting growth, especially new growth drivers.
At the same time, the Prime Minister will convey a message about Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements, share the vision, policies, development orientations and experience in macroeconomic management of the Party and Government of Vietnam. The Prime Minister will also call for cooperation and synergy between WEF and partners, especially in high-priority, emerging industries, future industries with spillover effects such as artificial intelligence (AI), science, technology and innovation, etc.
Opportunities for Vietnam
The WEF Dalian conference took place in the context of many difficulties in the world economy and slow growth recovery. The Asia-Pacific region continues to be a dynamic bright spot in the world economic picture with the expectation of promoting 2/3 of total global growth, but still faces some risks due to the fragmentation of the world economy, supply chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and competition between major countries.
The theme of this year’s WEF is “New Growth Horizons” with a focus on discussing and finding directions for new growth drivers, new industries, promoting the role of businesses, startups and innovation, and joining hands to respond to climate change. It is expected that 6 topics will be discussed, including: building a new global economy; entrepreneurship in the age of AI; connecting climate, nature and energy; pioneering fields for industries; China and the world; investing in people.
Responding to Thanh Nien on the afternoon of June 23, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Trung (Fulbright University Vietnam) said that the theme of the conference closely reflects the issues that are affecting the world economy today. According to Mr. Trung, with an economy of more than 400 billion USD and an increasingly important role in the global supply chain, an urgent need for clean energy conversion, as well as being in the process of industrialization and modernization of the country, Vietnam can be considered an active member of the WEF as a co-creator of the world economy.
Assessing the significance and importance of the working trip, Deputy Minister Pham Thanh Binh said the conference was an opportunity for Vietnam to grasp and contribute its voice to new issues, trends, new connotations, new driving forces for world economic growth, and to exchange development and governance thinking at the national and global levels. The conference was also an opportunity to promote our country's achievements in economic and social growth and development, conveying a strong message about a dynamic and innovative Vietnam, an attractive destination for global corporations. And the conference was also an opportunity for Vietnam to strengthen exchanges and promote relations with countries, partners, and international organizations, affirming our country's role and position in the international community, contributing to effectively implementing the foreign policy of the 13th National Party Congress.
Promoting Vietnam - China relations
As planned, during the trip, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will have bilateral talks and meetings with senior leaders of China. In the context that the two sides have recently agreed to deepen and elevate the Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, and to build a community of shared future of strategic significance between Vietnam and China, the maintenance of high-level contacts between the two sides is of utmost importance in enhancing political trust, concretizing common perceptions and high-level agreements between the two sides.
This is the second time in two consecutive years that the Prime Minister has visited and attended the WEF Conference in China, demonstrating the high regard of the Party and Government of Vietnam for the Vietnam-China Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership. In the context of the current profound, substantive and comprehensive development of the relationship between the two Parties and countries, Vietnamese Ambassador to China Pham Sao Mai said that the Prime Minister's working trip to attend the 2024 Dalian WEF and work in China will be an opportunity for senior leaders of the two countries to discuss in depth specific measures to continue effectively implementing the common perceptions reached between the top leaders of the two Parties and countries.
