Weather conditions are becoming more erratic, with prolonged rains accompanied by possible thunderstorms and hailstorms that can cause damage to trees, livestock, and farmers’ homes. In addition, droughts are occurring more frequently, making agricultural production difficult.

Many durian areas of Dak Nong farmers were damaged by storms and tornadoes in 2024.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung's family, Tan Phuong village, Dak R'moan commune, Gia Nghia city has more than 1 hectare of durian during harvest time.

During the heavy rains and whirlwinds in early June 2024, over 50% of his durian orchard lost fruit, causing an estimated loss of about 100 million VND.

"My family has lived and grown agricultural crops in the area for more than 20 years and has seen more and more extreme weather events with serious consequences," Mr. Hung learned from his experience.

In addition to Mr. Hung, many households in Dak R'moan commune suffered damage due to the whirlwind causing durians to fall off, break branches, and be uprooted during the storm and whirlwind above.

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the area of crops damaged by natural disasters and droughts every year in the province is very large. The great damage is caused not only to short-term crops but also to perennial and long-term crops, including key crops such as coffee, pepper, and durian.

Specifically, in 2023, in addition to hundreds of farmers' houses with damaged roofs, the whole province had over 1,100 hectares of various crops flooded; over 1,000 livestock and poultry died; many rural infrastructure works such as bridges and roads were eroded and damaged. The total damage is estimated at over 1,000 billion VND.

In the first 9 months of 2024, according to statistics from authorities, nearly 8,900 hectares of various crops in Dak Nong were affected by drought and water shortage. Many durian areas of people in areas such as Dak Mil, Dak Song, Gia Nghia City... were affected by tornadoes, causing fruit to fall, branches to break, and roots to be uprooted. 600 households in Krong No, Dak Mil, Cu Jut, and Tuy Duc districts lacked domestic water. The total estimated damage was over 50 billion VND.

Damage caused by natural disasters has increased the difficulty for farmers in ensuring a stable and sustainable life and livelihood. Farmers have to face increased production costs, when they have to invest more in fertilizing, watering, or repairing damaged irrigation and drainage works such as ponds.

Supporting farmers in coping with natural disasters is a focus of many levels and sectors in Dak Nong. According to the leader of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the agricultural sector is implementing a synthesis of many solutions, both short-term and long-term, to help farmers reduce the impact of natural disasters.

With the immediate solutions, the agricultural sector propagates, guides and trains people on measures, techniques and varieties to prevent and combat each type of natural disaster. After the disaster, the agricultural sector guides specific measures to overcome it.

Dak Nong province has a policy to support farmers in building advanced, energy-saving irrigation systems to prevent and combat drought.

In the long term, solutions on planning and production plans will be calculated more carefully by the agricultural sector and localities, ensuring production safety to serve effective agricultural restructuring.

The agricultural sector promotes activities to change crop structure to suit terrain and climate; comprehensively applies natural measures and science and technology to improve the resilience of crops and livestock to natural disasters.

The industry gradually helps farmers find ways to develop agricultural economy to adapt to the current context of climate change and increasingly severe natural disasters.
