The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Tri province, in coordination with the North Central Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology and Greencarbon Japan Vietnam CO.LTD, has just held a conference to sign a memorandum of understanding to pilot the project of creating carbon credits in rice production in Quang Tri.
Currently, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is one of the issues of global concern, especially in the context of climate change strongly affecting countries. In particular, reducing emissions in agricultural production is also one of the important contents in the National Strategy on Climate Change to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 896/QD-TTg dated July 26, 2022.
Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and localities are promoting the implementation of the Project "Sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030".

Quang Tri is a purely agricultural province with over 70% of the population living in rural areas. With an annual rice cultivation area of 50,000 hectares, up to now there are over 1,200 hectares of organic rice production, following the organic and natural farming direction, which has achieved efficiency in all three aspects of economy, society and environment; farmers have increased profits by 1.2 - 1.5 times compared to conventional farming, especially helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from organic rice production.
However, in addition to the achieved results, agricultural production in the province, especially large-scale rice production, still has limitations that need to be overcome to ensure effective and sustainable production. These limitations are: using a lot of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, wasting water resources, small-scale production, lack of strong links between rice growers and cooperatives and enterprises, leading to high production costs; large post-harvest losses; uneven rice quality; especially creating large emissions that negatively impact the environment and ecosystem.
This conference is of special importance, aiming to raise awareness among authorities at all levels and farmers to implement solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in rice production, while opening up new directions, increasing income for farmers through creating carbon credits in rice production.
At the conference, experts and scientists shared information to help raise awareness, together implement solutions and orientations in agricultural production in general and rice production in particular to both improve economic efficiency and save water, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and adapt to climate change in Quang Tri province.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Tri province, the North Central Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology and Green Carbon Japan Vietnam Co., Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in developing and piloting the Carbon Credit Generation Project in rice production in Quang Tri in 2025.
Thereby improving the efficiency of rice cultivation, saving water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate change, aiming to register credits according to Gold Stand and JCM standards, while promoting sustainable rice cultivation, enhancing economic value associated with the rice brand that reduces emissions, and increasing income for rice farmers.
This cooperation will be a premise for Quang Tri province to develop and expand the production area to effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to making Quang Tri a pioneer in developing green and sustainable agriculture.
