AFP reported that speaking at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UN) in New York (USA) on May 23, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared that the world is failing to protect civilians as the number of people caught up in conflicts and humanitarian crises skyrocketed last year.
According to UN statistics, in 2022 alone, the number of civilians killed in 12 conflicts reached nearly 17,000, an increase of 53% compared to the previous year, with the highest number in Sudan, Ukraine, Ethiopia and Syria. According to Mr. Guterres, 94% of victims of gunfire in attacks on densely populated areas were civilians, while more than 117 million people face hunger and severe food insecurity as a result of conflict and war. Worldwide, the number of refugees forced to leave their homes has reached 100 million.
