Dong Ha city is a type II urban area from August 8, 2024.

On August 8, 2024, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 813/QD-TTg on recognizing Dong Ha city as a type II urban area.

Accordingly, from August 8, 2024, Dong Ha city is a type II urban area, directly under Quang Tri province (the scope is the entire administrative boundary of the existing Dong Ha city, including 9 wards, with a total natural area of 73.09 ^km2 ).

The Prime Minister assigned the Ministries of Construction and Home Affairs; Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Tri province and heads of relevant agencies to be responsible for implementing Decision No. 813/QD-TTg.

Dong Ha City is the political, economic, cultural and social center of Quang Tri Province, located at the intersection of National Highway 1A connecting Hanoi Capital - Ho Chi Minh City and the East-West Trans-Asian road system connecting Thailand - Laos - Myanmar with countries in the region. Currently, Dong Ha City consists of 9 wards, a total area of 73.09 ^km2 , a population of 164,228 people, of which the permanent population is 102,478 people, the converted population is 61,750 people.

In December 2005, Dong Ha was recognized as a type III urban area by the Ministry of Construction. In August 2009, Dong Ha was recognized as a provincial city by the Government.
