Disappointed because she failed the top Economics school, Thuy "had to study" Textile Technology at Hanoi University of Science and Technology but then felt lucky.
On the eve of Tet, Dang Thi Thanh Thuy, 23, a senior student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, went to school to take her final exams and defend her graduation thesis. Thuy is expected to graduate a semester early.
Previously, Thuy received the title of "5 Good Students" at the central level with many achievements in studying, training ethics, physical fitness, volunteering and integration. Thuy's average score last year was 3.84/4. The female student was admitted to the Party in September and had a scientific article published in a prestigious domestic magazine.
"Looking back on the whole journey, I feel lucky because I thought I wasn't suited for this major and school," Thuy said.

Thuy is from Thai Binh. As an active high school student, Thuy was advised to take the exam for the Economics school to both study and participate in many union and association activities. The female student followed the advice and placed her first choice in the Business Administration major at an Economics school. For her second choice, Thuy chose the Textile Technology major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology because "she is a bit skillful, her older sister used to study at this school".
In 2019, Thuy was disappointed when she failed her first choice when she took the entrance exam with a combination of Math, Physics, and Chemistry. Seeing her classmates all being accepted to the University of Economics, Thuy was even sadder. With her sister's encouragement and not wanting to stay home for a year just to retake the exam, she decided to enroll in the Polytechnic University.
Entering the school, Thuy was surprised to see that a technical school like Bach Khoa also had dozens of clubs, in addition to union and association activities. Like a fish in water, Thuy actively participated in the Faculty Union, the School Student Association, the English Club...
However, the girl from Thai Binh encountered great difficulties in studying because the university lecture hall was completely different from the small class size in high school. Thuy struggled to learn the first subjects, which were considered "the terror of Polytechnic students" such as Analysis and Algebra.
"I know I have to pay attention and take notes in class, but when I just bend down to write a formula and review it to see if it's correct, I look up and the teacher has written all over the board, I can't keep up," Thuy described.

Thuy changed her study method, starting with the motto "learning from teachers is not as good as learning from friends". Because she participated in the Youth Union, was a member of the Study, Scientific Research and Career Guidance Committee of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Thuy got to know many seniors, and asked them for advice on how to study, review for exams and introduce materials. The female student also teamed up with good students in class to form study groups to support each other.
"There were days when our group discussed until 1-2am, solving many problems and overcoming weaknesses," Thuy shared. Gradually, Thuy's academic results improved.
In her fourth year, Thuy received her first A-level academic scholarship, the highest level of the school. Thuy also participated in scientific research on the topic of industrial wastewater treatment. The article was later published in the Journal of Applied Chemistry, one of the journals recognized by the State Council of Professors.
Despite investing more in studying, Thuy still arranges to participate fully in movement activities. The female student accepts that there are periods when she has to study until 2-3am because she spends half of her time each day on these activities.
Associate Professor Dr. Phan Thanh Thao, Head of the Faculty of Textile, Footwear and Fashion - School of Materials, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, commented that Thuy grew up from union activities.
"She is an outstanding student, good at everything, very inquisitive and eager to learn. Not only is she a good student, Thuy is also enthusiastic in general work, promoting student recruitment for the faculty, and has a talent for designing communication publications," said Ms. Thao.
Preparing to get a degree in Textile Technology, Thuy has the opportunity to work as a manager and production operator in enterprises. The female student has also received a number of invitations with good starting salaries. However, Thuy is thinking about studying further, at the school she has been attached to for the past 5 years.
