Bangkok (Thailand) has recorded 10 deaths, most of them victims of the collapse of a high-rise building - caused by aftershocks of the terrible earthquake that occurred in Myanmar on March 28.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn directed to immediately improve the public warning system via SMS and develop a mobile TV system within three months to ensure timely information to the people.
At the same time, she asked the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to strengthen coordination to promptly update traffic conditions, road closures and alternative routes after natural disasters.
To ensure the safety of Bangkok, the Thai government urgently searched for missing people, reviewed high-rise building permits, assessed safety standards, urban planning and building codes.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn also called on the whole country to join hands to repair houses, check infrastructure and hotels to ensure safety for tourists.
The Thai Royal Palace has announced the extension of royal medical care to all victims injured in the earthquake.
In Bangkok, fearing damage from the earthquake, hospitals rushed to evacuate patients to safety.
At Rajavithi Hospital, doctors and nurses quickly evacuated patients from the building. Some patients were transferred back to the hospital on the morning of March 29. Meanwhile, the Airports Corporation of Thailand (AOT) said operations at six airports, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, Chiang Rai and Phuket, had returned to normal following the earthquake.
AOT confirmed that the buildings at these airports remained intact and the aviation infrastructure met safety standards.
Many Bangkok residents are still in a state of panic, fearing that aftershocks may continue. Some people choose to sleep outdoors, setting up tents in parks to spend the night.
The earthquake disaster in Myanmar caused strong aftershocks in Bangkok, about 1,000km south of the epicenter, causing a 30-storey building under construction to completely collapse.
According to the latest report from Thai authorities, Bangkok has recorded 10 deaths, most of them victims of this high-rise building collapse disaster. Rescue forces are still trying to find more than 100 people who may be buried in the rubble.
