The measure targets those who violate Telegram's rules, which were introduced to prevent criminals from using the app's internal search function.

In a statement on the Telegram channel, Mr. Durov said that Telegram can provide "IP addresses and phone numbers of those who violate our regulations to the relevant authorities in order to respond to reasonable legal requests."

The messaging app has updated its terms of service and privacy policy to be consistent across the world, he said, in an effort to prevent abuse of its "Telegram Search" feature for illegal sales.

However, in recent weeks, Telegram has been removing all problematic content from search, and a dedicated moderation team has been using artificial intelligence to make searching in Telegram safer.

Mr Durov, of Russian origin, was arrested in Paris last month and later released on bail of 5 million euros.

He is accused of multiple crimes related to failing to prevent extremist and illegal content on Telegram, as well as being involved in organized crime and illegal transactions, refusing to share documents requested by the authorities, failing to prevent child pornography, drug trafficking, fraud and money laundering.
